Im going to try that apple cider vinegar thing , but might have to take it in a salad or something. AR nearly choked me in my sleep the other night. I have to jack the front of my bed up till Im almost sitting up but that works.Boy latley it has been bad. Only when I eat certian things, and strangly pizza isnt one of them....Turkey stuffing gets me every time.

Cindiloohhoo, do you eat the Ginger? I will get some at the store today. Thanks

The Pollo Loco, I'll look that up today too. Thanks

My 8yr old has had this problem since birth.. We've taken him to several specialists. It seemed to go away for a few years, but here lately it's been bad again. I don't know what I can do for him? I gave him half of an acid reducing pill, and it seems to help, but I'd love to know why he has this problem at such a young age. He's not over weight or under weight. He's normal size, and doesn't over eat... I'm stumped!

Yes, terribly. I'm on Prilosec. Was going to talk to the doctor soon because I'm tired of taking meds daily. I feel that anytime you have to take a med for a prolonged period of time (7 yrs. for me) it can't be good for you. I want to stop.....

the apple cider vinegar goes down better if you take 2 tablespoons in 8 oz of water with a tsp of raw honey. It doesn't make it great, but it makes it palatable and you get used to it after awhile. I'm just reading Bragg's book now.
Also, are you sure you don't have sleep apnea? AR is one sign of that, in addition to nobody else getting much sleep at night. My H has sleep apnea and complained of AR all the time till he got his sleep apnea machine. That has made all the difference in the world to him ( an me. hahahaaa..) plus, before the machine, he was so darn crabby all the time from not having enough oxygen and basically not sleeping. I didn't sleep either because I was laying there waiting for his breathing to kick in. ( he was resistant to going to the Dr. for a long time) Consequently, I was a night nomad in my house for years, looking for a quiet place to sleep. I'm a terribly light sleeper and even the dog coming up to me and breathing near me wakes me up!!
I find I have AR if I drink too much coffee. I have read up on all the pills and they are for short term use, but they alter the gastric juices and thus you don' t have the proper digestion of your food. There is a whole different ball game going on every time you take a pill for this and a pill for that. It takes your body a long time to get the stuff out of your system. Of course, for short term, sometimes its worth it. good luck.

Try ginger root...you can buy it raw at the grocery store. Cut off a piece about the size of the tip of your pinky finger and peel. Chew well and swallow with water. It makes a huge difference and it's really cheap.

The non rx things to do are avoid caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods, acidic foods, peppermints, alcohol and smoking. They all change the pressure of the esophageal sphincter allowing the acid to back up easier. Avoid laying down within 3 hours after eating and that includes late eve meals, then going to bed. You can also raise the head of your bed on 6 inch blocks to help keep the acid in the stomach where it belongs. You need to take the Prilosec, Prevacid daily to prevent so much acid pumping, not just when you have the reflux cause it takes a long time for effectiveness. It can lead to Barretts Esophagus, esophgeal strictures and cancer if left to continue without treatment for a long time.
I had it so bad for years and took every prescription available and ate what I was supposed to and still thought I was having a heart attack several times a week. I finally had a lap Nissan surgery which wraps the top of the stomach around the bottom of the esophagus so the acid can't wind it's way up. Also can't vomit but that's another story. Anyway, that was 6 years ago and haven't had a problem since.

Is it the caffeine in the coffee? I'm not sure I can make it without my coffee. But I think tomorrow I will start a new life. NO coffee, I don't eat any of the other things you talked about. I did make meat loaf yesterday and the onions got me. I should have known better.

I sleep sitting up on the couch because if I go to bed and use my pillows after a couple of hours I'm up out of bed again. I can go for days without having it but then when it comes back it's here for days.

It's funny sometimes I can eat pizza and sometimes not. I make sure there is no spices in my food and my DH has to add it when he eats.

morelcabin, I'm going to get the Ginger root today. Thanks

Ill let you know how it works.

Now lets fix everyone with this.
