How many quail can I fit into my rabbit hutch?

Hi there! I’m new to raising quail. Today I got 8 quail chicks. I’m keeping them in a 2 story rabbit hutch. There is a little ramp for them to go down to the first floor, but for now I’m keeping them only on the second floor.

Is this space big enough for 8 quail chicks?

I would say that size is fine for now. You will want to remove all but 1 male once they reach maturity. Extra males will fight and injure your females. Some males seem to have a mean streak and will scalp your females so select your male carefully.

Yours don't really look like chicks though so I would expect to know males from females in the next 3 weeks or so!

They are 3 weeks old Cortunix quail. Thank you for the advice! If you have any more, please let me know. I’m a newbie so I’m not entirely sure what I should know/what questions I should be asking. :p

My males always reveal themselves around week 6 and then my girls lay between 8 and 10 weeks old. I've raised the jumbo browns, the a and m whites, and some fun color mixes like cinnamon and tuxedos but prefer the jumbo browns because you can sex them as soon as they feather in. The boys have red on their breast whereas the females do not. The odd colored birds leave you waiting for the mating call.

Keep in mind that more room generally means healthier, more content, less aggressive birds. I might be weird, but I'd only keep three hens in a hutch that size.

I agree. 3 hens and 1 male should be content. If there are extra hens you can also split them into breeding trios and keep one set on the top, keep the ramp closed, and keep the other set on the bottom!

One more thought, all that straw might make egg collection really tricky.
