How old was the oldest eggs you ever hatched out??

I have some chicks hatching right now that came from 4 week old eggs. We lost our beloved rooster and so we decided to give this batch a chance even tho it had been sitting around so long. On day 18 we candled and had 38 out of 41 moving. They started hatching yesterday and so far we have 12 new chicks. I have never used eggs over 2 weeks because of a thread I read saying it was just a waste of incubator space but now I am so glad I gave it a go.

I just joined BYC today after constantly coming here to read forums to answer my questions.

I just put some 6 week egg old eggs that I forgot about in the incubator along with my 1 week old eggs ( they were cool stored in my basement). They have been in for a week now. I was just really curious to see if they would hatch. My last two hatches have had a success rate of about 75% with eggs ranging from 1-3 weeks. I do not candle. I just wait the 21-24 days and see waht happens. I will update the results in a few weeks.

Welcome, I haven't been on BYC for long either.

I'm curious too. 6 weeks will be a real test.

I wish we had basements in Australia.

I am sorry to hear of your rooster and so excited for you about your hatch. I really hope you get a rooster with all the characteristics you loved about your lost boy.

I'm curious, how did you keep the eggs?

I stored them with my wine bottles in a little cabinet my fiance built for me. It was the only cool darkish place I could think of in my house. Out of 41 fertile eggs I only got 14 chicks. I opened a few that did not hatch and they were all formed, I think the humidity was too high in the incubator.

I haven't used an incubator before, but it does sound like something like that went wrong. It's very sad they didn't all make it but marvellous that you got some after so long.

I don't recall precisely how old they were any more. Call them about three and a half weeks. Stored in my refrigerator, and turned daily after the first week. Got about 50% hatch rate which is a lot lower than my usual, but given the fact that they were laid in the hot weather then stored for much longer than I ordinarily keep them I was happy.
