In addition to our golden comet who laid her first egg at 16 weeks we now have two rhode island reds laying an egg a day. They started laying at 18 weeks. Someone was laying her egg on the floor in the corner so we put in a plastic milk crate with hay in it and she now lays her eggs in that. The other hens lay inside the little coop, inside the indoor coop in the nesting box area. The eggs are on the small side but I think they'll get bigger later on.
Black Star:
1st egg @ 18weeks
Light to dark brown eggs the size of store-bought small eggs
One a day since she started - she is a little Chicken Metronome
Delaware:
1st egg at 20 weeks - just this week on Wednesday
Light brown - same size as Black Stars, 1st egg was perfect - next one was an "oops" with a rubbery shell
I have another Delaware, another Black Star and a Houdan who aren't laying yet - all 21weeks old tomorrow
They are Slackers
Today I can answer this question, yesterday I couldn't.
Breed, Golden Comet
Age 16 Weeks 2 Days
1 of 3 of the same breed plus 3 Plymouth Rock Barred (1 rooster). She is the first in the flock to lay.
The egg is the color of sand and the size of a golf ball (I hope they get larger)
Barred Rocks; we have 4, of which 2 have produced eggs.
The first was Maggie at 19 weeks + a few days.
The 2nd was Martha, same age.
The 3rd and 4th, Molly and Mimi, are the same age, but maturing more slowly than the other 2.
The egg size is about a medium store bought size, light brown and mostly solid color and smooth, but one is speckled.
We opened one, and it was a single yolk but gorgeous in color and consistency.
They started laying Saturday, Aug 22, and we now have 8 eggs, so they are not yet laying regularly.
The first one was out in the run, found by my son. The next day we got two in the egg boxes. Day three we got two brown and our first green EE egg. By the end of the week we had an even dozen. Sat morning we had eggs and bacon...lol.
Here's a pic. Egg #1 is the long disfigured one on top. The first seven we cracked were double yokers.
I shoulda tooks pics in the egg box. Didn't think of it til now...duh.
My first eggs were just about 20 weeks on the dot. I have Red Stars. They didn't all start simultaneously; four of the 12 aren't laying yet. And it took a little time for the other seven to start -- maybe another week.
