How old was your hen when she laid her 1st egg?

If you put a golf ball or fake egg (like they sell at the feed store) in their nest, they 'should' get the idea. 'Should' is the key word here.

If I find a hidden nest, I indulge them and allow them to continue laying there if the eggs are not in peril. For example, yesterday, I found a clutch of 17 eggs under a boat. I candled them all and determined there were no developing chicks, likely due to the high heat. Then I removed 12, marked the remaining 5 with red marker, and returned them to the nest. Today, I watched two hens return to the nest and lay their eggs. If I had removed all of the eggs, the chickens would have deemed it an unsafe spot and gone elsewhere to lay. As long as I know where they lay, I add it to my list of checking places, which just makes it more fun. Sort of like an Easter egg hunt every day!

Yahoo!!! Our White Oprington, otherwise known as Lady Grey, has laid her first egg at 23 weeks, 3 days.

Finally, our Light Brahma and Buff Rock appear to at least be getting INTERESTED in laying eggs. They check out the egg boxes, and even stand in them for a while, but then they leave without laying eggs. But I run out there every time!

Here's the White Orpington egg on the left, a Black Star egg on the right

Did you already get your first laying's added to the list on page 1?

Oh, it's awful to be so expectant for something like an EGG. Who would have thought we'd end up like this!!

We have only one Polish, and he has yet to lay. My daughter, who refuses to call him a boy, says 'she' will lay eggs real soon. IF he ever DOES lay, you can bet BYC will be the first to know. Update when yours lays, please!

I'll add the dark brahma. Wait, is she a bantam?

she must be because she is tiny-2 lbs max! I have never had brahmas before and when I was given her I thought shed grow ALOT bigger. Last week I just said that I wont get those again because they are too tiny-I also have a light bantam brahma same age and has yet to lay-my mille fluer same ageno eggs either:-( I didnt realize they came in two sizes! Which seems duhhh.because chickens all come in different sizes depending on how they are bred-blonde moment I guess:)

Since I last posted we have more hens laying. We're getting seven eggs a day. We have 12 birds. This morning two of the eggs we broke open for breakfast were double yolkers! I can't believe it. We have all 6 of the golden comets laying now and one RIR.
