When I remodeled our kitchen in VA we went almost 2 years without running water in the kitchen. poor planning on my part--but that's what happens when you're a crew of 2 working a few hours per night and on the weekends. And the new owners love it

i think it helps "putting up" with things if you've done without previously. we used to go camping every holidays. showering out of a hessian bag, fetching water from a communal tap, how to cook without a fancy stove, i think going camping should be taught at schools. things like cooking and 'making do' can be useful.

you can also get a whole range of other camping things that will run off an lpg tank. i have a thingie that heats up water/you can have a shower with (assuming clean water, of course). If I was in the path of an event that might cut off services, getting in some lpg tanks would be right up there on the list of things to do.

It would be expensive, but you can get refrigerators that run on propane. That's what all of the RVs have.

Ok, time to show my ignorance! PLease explain how to make a rocket stove. This is new to me, I think, as I am not sure what it is. LOL

You can make a rocket stove from just about anything that is non-combustible. G̶o̶o̶g̶l̶e̶ Goolag it; lot's of how-tos.

yes, you could have every luxury in a portable mode if you could afford it. as well, solar panels get you power for other 'stuff', i've got a solar-powered tent light. some of those winnebago thingies are better than my house (and priced up in the stratosphere)

There are a TON of different designs, some are "dig into the ground" others involve rocks, etc.. All for back packers and campers. Then people started taking those ideas and then domesticating them. This is one of my favorites. Its simple easy to assemble and store outside the house and then easy to put together and use if you need it.

But this is also and idea one can take to the extreems... Somewhere out there I saw a guys with a six burner job made out of cinder blocks. Simple or exotic, your choice.

Would need to be fire bricks.
Regular bricks can explode-- experience is a good teacher.

Kiki's current complaints:
(In order of priority)
1. Internet
2. TV service for the news
3. The wet stinky nasty chicken coop/run.

That's it. Not too shabby for just surviving a historic flood event.

I'd move #3 to the top.
