What's happening?

They need water, fuel, and food. We don't allow foreign flagged vessels to deliver such things without a waiver and one hasn't been granted for Maria. That said, I suspect one of the reasons is that they haven't been able to move things out of the ports due to lack of air support, which is supposed to be on the way. Waivers were issued for all three FL, TX, and PR in the wake of Harvey and Irma--but the difference is that there was aerial support to handle it. So right now it looks like they need more aerial support, which can only get there in a C-5 or C-17 and the airports have limited capacity right now. And once aerial support gets there they need aviation fuel which is not stacked up in the ports. So basically, we have to move both aircraft and fuel to solve the problem. ARG

Ships should handle some of that no? Cruise ships have offered to pick up those who wish to evac like the cajun navy helped previous. Permission was denied for that is what i heard. Meanwhile US ships were not ready to go.

I have a lot of experience in supporting disaster. Please don't ask why. Only reason they wouldn't welcome more supplies from foreign flagged vessels is lack of storage space. It get's really ugly and really complicated. Unneeded things show up and take valuable storage space while needed things are off dock. Think of it like this... It's 90+ degrees and they need fuel to run generators to cool things. So we know they need fuel, water and food, but what shows up is a ship load of construction supplies. Yes they will need that--but not right now and don't take up dock or storage space with it. Does that make sense?

Is a pressure cooker a canner?

A very large pressure cooker is a canner (holds seven quart jars). A small pressure cooker is only a pressure cooker...

I was picturing your 26" tall pot (160 quart) on my stove ...would be too tall for me to reach the top. Glad you added the stove photo...easy to use outside.

I love good old American food... but I love Eastern European food... And I know if my grandfather was still alive, he'd be upset that my daughters don't like kraut. LOL

We have made our own kraut for years. I have a 20 gallon crock , two 10 gallon crocks and two 5 gallon crocks. We waterbath the quart jars to seal them.

I Am mostly Latvian (my grandfather came off a ship during the war) and the food he used to make BUT on the same hand he grew up in a very large family and didn't have much, they even made head cheese but he did teach my mom some stuff and mushrooming

Love head cheese. Have made it old fashioned But you can get the same taste by using pork shoulders instead of the hog heads.

Omg y'all what a day! Hobo the Dominique has lost at least three leg scales i don't know what happened. And at dinner all my girls showed but one, I went looking and saw her in a heap on the ground I immediately freaked out! I picked her up and she was fine, just so full of dirt she couldn't move. I'm still sick with a cold and these chickens are going to finish me off.

Sure but with your experience in disaster response you would not have waited til 5 days after Maria- the 2nd hit - to begin making the USS Comfort ready. And to begin organizing supply ships(reports of slpwer barges being used instead of ships). And why not accept the vessels volunteering to evacuate people?
