I could use a point toward a primer

I've just too many questions to ask. I'd like to read a primer or idiots guide for keeping a few birds for eggs,,, and occasional weekend getaways.
Up to 6 hens, no rooster. Central NJ. about 300 sq. ft mixed sun/shade. all the usual suspects are regular visitors- fox, coyote, hawks and eagles. possum and raccoons.
any such all-in-one guide on this site or elsewhere online?
