so i have 2 of my girls laying eggs just helter skelter. 1 on a shelf which is tolerable but the other just drops her egg where ever. I have found eggs out in the middle of the yard 2x. Not in a hole a fluffy spot or even under anything just out in the yard like she was walking along dropped it and went on about her business. What the heck? Anyone have any ideas? I have fake eggs I have several nesting spots.

Yes very new. Around a month.
Ah ok. They are just getting started. Maybe during the morning hours keep them inside the coop so they have an option to lay in the nest boxes and nowhere else. Keep the fake eggs and everything and hopefully that will help them understand.

When they first start they can almost remind you of a old lady running for the restroom lol.
Keep them close to the boxes. Keep them in the run until they lay. Usually it happens in the morning. They’ll figure it out. Enjoy the drama...chickens are funny creatures.

Nesting spots don't necessarily mean nest boxes. What are they? Are they in a secluded space? Does light shine into them?

They are dark rubber tubs with a hole in the lid as a door. I had lowe’s Buckets but the hated them. Most use the tabs now but 2 anyway.

New layers, pullets sometimes don’t seem to have the control, or the feeling at their vent to know if they’ve laid the egg, or not.
I get one or two pullets most years I find I’m following down a path half bent over waiting to catch the egg when it drops. :D She, the pullet seems to think the jobs done and goes clucking off to join her group. Some don’t even break stride as the egg finally drops.
I thinks it’s normal and something they get sorted out in time without any human assistances.

That's hilarious. I am picturing you in my mind trying to keep up with the chicken, who's trying to keep up with the Flock.
I try to be careful collecting and carrying eggs.
Today I was lining up eggs on the kitchen table to take a photo, and 1 rolled off. :barnie. GC
