I Have Shingles! ** UPDATE** Now My Daughter Has Chicken Pox! (Pg 10)

Oh, I just buy it over the counter!

I didn't realize how much the OTC stuff wasn't working until I bought the pure-grade powder! It's cheaper in the long-run too 'cause I end up taking less.

that's ok... I have trouble scrolling to read a long thread too. When my illness is active I get provoked seizures from too much up and down.

I asked my doc about the preventative vaccine and I am not a qualified participant. I have several things counting against me.

First: I am not past the child bearing stage in my life. They are not sure the lasting effects it could have.

second: It is only recommended to those who have never had shingles in the first place. Apparently most people, who do get shingles (which is a small portion of the populus), will get the virus once. About 4% of those who do have shingles could get it again.

As for the Lysine powder it does help. Not a lot but some. As for the pain nothing ever took it completely away. I still have pain and probably will for some time. Hydrocodone took the edge off and made it so that I didn't care as much. I refused to take anything stronger because I really hate taking things that cause me to feel detached from reality. I was told to use the medicated lysterine on the blisters. It didn't seem to help for me but my 11 year old neighbor said it really helped her.

The vaccine is usually given to older folks because it wears off in about 5 years. I'm too young, and my naturopath told me with CAEBV it might actually make me sicker.

If the Lysine isn't helping, take more!

I take Hydrocodone too - but can only take 1/2 tab at a time w/o getting some seizure activity. Probably shouldn't be taking it at all. I am going to see a pain specialist who has talked about putting me on Methadone. I NEVER knew Methadone was given for severe/chronic pain! I was thinking "what the...? i'm not a heroin addict!"

For a loooong time I refused entirely to take 'narcotics'. My naturopath said "you are 48 years old, all your children are gone, your pain level is at 8+ what's the darn problem?" That was the first time I ever took anything more than aspirin/tylenol, and what a huge relief it is not to live with intense pain 24/7.

ANYWAY ... don't get me started! (reminding myself this thread is about Laurie's shingles)
