I think I killed my chicks...

Well I did my first assisted hatch and got out baby number two from a tiny egg. Zipped all the way around, just couldn’t kick through so I got the top off and here it is (the small one)

Newsprint/adds paper is too slippery for babies. Paper towels are better for traction and preventing slipped tendons and splayed legs.

Aww, so cute! Well done! :thumbsup

I noticed that they're on newspaper, which can be pretty slippery for those little feet. Even better for the first couple days is paper towel laid out over the newspaper or brooder floor. It just makes it a little easier for them to walk, but even that can lead to leg problems like splayed legs. Wood shavings or grass clippings are the best after a few days. :)

At least two chicks thanks to everyone’s advice and learned something new about the brooder (in my defense they use newspaper at the local farm supply store when they sell chicks so I was just following their lead - thanks for the correction!).
Congrats!! They are so adorable:love:love I hope the rest hatch out for you too!
