Icelandic Chickens

Anna hatched 5 out of the 10 eggs given to her. Eight of these eggs had been collected and started in BYCer apc's incubator since I had my very first try in mine and didn't want to stagger anything. I got a couple more eggs before Anna stopped laying and went broody. I put those in my incubator, knowing I would give them to Anna if she was serious. She was so I got the 8 eggs back from apc and added the two I had. Don't know if transporting them 3 miles in the car in the middle of incubation had anything to do with four of the eggs being quitters. One egg looked like it was still good but I didn't want her keeping the chicks on the nest for a maybe. I gave that egg to a SLW who's been on a golf ball for two weeks. If she hatches it, fine, if not fine too. Here are a couple of pics. Looks like even a broody can have a "sticky" chick!! Looking up the Icelandic word for "shelly"!!

Still no box of icelandic "chocolates" in plain white wrappers from the PO........

They're going to be a week behind the others at this rate... I guess we'll be doing an experiment on the hatchability of old Icelandic eggs....assuming they haven't been scrambled...

Glad your 4 are doing well Jake...

Love the laced crest Mary... I think I have two of those (can't quite tell for sure through the wrapper though)

Here's hoping the PO calls tomorrow!!

BTW I have a goose pipped tonight!!! This is the first time I have hatched any waterfowl... Have a Chinese goose pipped and some Muscovy ducks that are due tomorrow...... Now how do I make sure the first thing they see is the DW??? "I'm sorry dear, we have to keep them now.. they think you are their mother.. see......"

Beautiful chicks Kathy! How could you let them go? I'd be putting some in my pockets to keep. But I am like that. Really great assortment of colors. I like the second picture with the dark chipmunk pattern. Oh heck, I like them all! Why am I up at 0430 looking at chicken pictures?

I wondered why you were up so early!

It was a great hatch with an excellent variety, I thought! I really wanted to keep them, but consoled myself knowing I can keep the next batch.

Note in your package.... green bands = Olive Eggers. There ended up being 2 blue, when I originally thought there was only 1.

I am so excited! Note to others who have no idea what we are talking about, Kathy sent me a sympathy shipment of chicks! I was sad about giving up my Mille Fleur leghorn breeding project and she sent me chicks to fill my brooder again! My layer coop is down to five occupants once I move the last five Icelandics and any roos so they will have plenty of company soon. I was a little nervous about telling Michael I was getting more birds. His response, "What are we getting?" Gotta love that! I just have to keep the voodoo woman from putting the curse on them! You know who you are.

For the most part, the contents of my package are unknown and I can't wait to see what's in it! I now know there are two blue olive eggers and I saw a picture of 4 gorgeous lavender Orps. Even Jack and Diane are excited! Thanks Kathy for your kindness! Apologies in advance to everyone for the picture heavy posts to come!
