Orpingtons(mainly Buff but possibly Splash,Lavender or Chocolate) and Black Australorps. They may not be as flashy as some of the others mentioned but these two breeds have the greatest personalities of all the chickens we've had. They are great layers,very hardy bird,dual-purpose if you need meat birds, and are supposed to be good brood hens if you want to raise chicks. If I had to be limited to only two breeds and was in a situation that required self-suffiency those are the breeds I could depend on.
