WOW.......the 4 1/2 years I lived in Alaska, that was one thing I missed the most! I practically had a party the first snake I saw after getting back to the lower 48.
I think you did the right thing, although I would have just removed it. (I have a high tolerance for snakes and have a bit of experience dealing with moving them...not the same for everyone.) We have a 6+ foot black snake living under our house. I'm awfully glad she's there - I haven't seen any rats or mice in our yard. But in the house...no thanks...she would be moved to the back 40...or maybe just under my honey's shed!!!
We moved into our 1920s farmhouse last summer. When we moved in, the house had stood empty for a few months. I found a bunch of mouse poo throughout the house and a snakeskin in the vent flap of our oil furnace. Since we moved in, though, we haven't seen a single varmint in the house. Maybe having the three cats helps?
And I was thinking about you this morning...it must've totally creeped you out to find her in your kitchen. All I have to complain about is the cat yack I stepped in to start my day...
Well, we got another one in my unfinished bedroom. It's right next to MY bedroom. They're still getting in through the soffit or a small crack in the chimney (or both). It's right on the other side of this bedroom.
DH is out now getting drywall, spray foam, and cement or concrete to patch the chimney. It was just as big as the other, but a little more fat.
And totally NOT afraid of me...
Do they travel in pairs? Do you think there's more in the attic? Will they go out during the day when we plug up the holes, so I know they won't be showing up in other parts of the house?

TY! I did love that mixer...
My dogs never saw it either! Last summer, their was another black snake half way under a spare bedroom door, pulling it's shed off. It's head was inside the bedroom and I was in the hallway (the door was closed). When I came upon it...
...my cat was gently touching it with her paw...
I yelled at the cat and had to call DH home from work again...
The high school where I teach was built on swamp land. We have snakes crawl under the doors a lot. I had a group of students in the media center and a snake slithered from under the bookcase. LOL!
