I know it's confusing sometimes. I mix the flock food and the layer crumbles together and feed everyone. Just my personal opinion they seem to like it better and i don't think the roo is going to get enough excess calcium to harm him from the mix.
Yeah, I'm going all crazy with the food thing for *one ungrateful rooster*, lol! I initially was feeding my coop with the ACs and my bantam cochin All Flock pellets (mixed wth the chick starter), but they didn't seem to like it, so now I'm transitioning them to Flock Raiser crumbles. Which they seem to like better. My chooks are so spoiled!

But I loves em...:love:love:love

Those flock raiser crumbles must be good, all mine eat them like crazy. I went nutty at first trying to feed everyone all those freaking bags at the store layer, pellets, crumbles, organic etc...omg! I saw that big honking bag that feeds everything and i was like yeeees! Didn't have as good of luck with that flock block thing they sell, chickens hated it birds barely ate it.

Omg they're killing me! Went out to feed them and they're all puffed up in a circle I'm thinking this cannot be good! Guess what? It wasn't! The dummies are puffed up around a HAWK that's trying to eat a chipmunk.....what is wrong with my chickens?!? :barnie

Ewww! What did you do??!??!!

Ok the blood on the egg, totally normal it happens no need for concern or additional butt checks unless you just want to lol! And she will most likely lay through winter since this is her first year, next year she will molt and take a couple months off from laying. :)

And for what its worth, I like buying Flock Raiser for my birds, but i use layer feed mostly, because it's cheaper. Chicks eat it too, roosters eat it too... I personally think there's alot of hogwash over feed.
If you believe the stuff about the harm to the roosters, consider how long you will keep your rooster anyway. I rotate them more than my girls, so they can eat what i provide or flock off. :D

I hope their is some good coming! All I see right now is the holidays coming and being broke! And Ive def been covered in mud and rain, trying to fix that run. It was mud that sunk you up to your knees! My illness is so weird and I think Ive been tested for almost everything with no for sure result. I hope you find an answer.

On the "up" side: I found 4 eggs yesterday and they were all in a nestbox! Usually 1 is on the poop board, 1 is in a corner and 1 is in the middle of the coop floor! Here is my haul from yesterday! My camera makes everything light, all eggs are a bit darker than they appear in photo. That green looking one is actually more blue.

Start selling those eggs at $300 per dozen -- that will surely cover Christmas? Though I tried that, and my neighbors laughed at me.....

You have to be *sobbing* and covered in mud and rain, then the good stuff happens. You missed that part! You're obviously not beaten down enough. Here's hoping it doesn't come to that just yet!

I squealed like the girl i am lol! I didn't have my glasses so until it flew it looked like leaves, so it flew i squealed and then "now I'm ashamed of this" cussed the chickens for being dummies. :lau

Whoa! They're hardcore. I like their style. My chickens are all peace and love and rainbow West Coast Hippie Chicks -- they run to me if there's a butterfly in the yard!

I've got a bunch of dink butt faverolles, that's not normal! They were all puffed up looked like fluffy cobras. I've been finding these reddish brown feathers in the yard clumps of them and they didn't match any of my girls or the roo i think i know where they're coming from now !

Sounds like you had your own personal Westside Story going on out there. Glad the hawk had a chipmunk out there to keep it busy. I bet the chickens were all waiting to see if they could get a bit of it.

I almost had a heart attack lol! Imagine what the hawk was thinking, its like a hamburger about to beat you up while you're eating a hotdog.

I was told that even though I have 2 boys to not bother buying them special food b/c it won't hurt them that much. BUT I had read that the calcium would hurt them. I've tried flock raiser and meat bird feed, but the store by me only has those in crumble and it seems my big boy likes the pellets and looks at me like he's starving while he stares at a bowl full of crumble. I was buying feather fixer, but it's $18 for a 40 lb bag as opposed to $14 for a bag of pellet layer feed. I also mix crumble w/ pellets, but I have a couple bantams and I'm not sure the little one could handle the pellets... she probably can though & I'm being over protective of her. I agree... it is stupid that the layer feed has lower protein. I was told that my production layers (tetra & amber browns) required higher protein to lay production numbers. If I could find it cheaper I'd buy the higher protein, but I don't see any increase in laying with it and they seem happy enough w/ the layer feed. I give them some warm mash in the morning and occasionally mix in some egg, but that's more to warm them up in the morning after a cold night.

Mine are 30 weeks or older, some laying, some not -- they all get the layer feed that they sell (wait for it.......) at the Liquor Store! I know! One stop shopping out here! I get my stove pellets, my rabbit pellets, and my layer pellets (plus nicotine pellets and liquid alcohol pellets), Costco toilet paper, almost at cost, all in one place. You can even rent a U-haul truck there. There are local farmers who sell their eggs at the Liquor Store (the store takes $.25, the rest goes to the farmer).

Small town living.
