I HATE THOSE STEREOTYPES.. they make ME want to kill... lol!! Maybe if you didnt inbreed your pitbull and use them for dog fighting then they wouldnt be "vicious" I would be mean sometimes too if i got stereotyped!! Just because their jaws can lock doesnt mean they are gonna bight your head off.. I have NEVER met a mean one.. I have had 4 and i just had one pass away after him being 15 years old. Sweetest dog ever. The only way you could die from his is by drowning in his dog slobber kisses!

This is one of those MYTHS about pit bulls that have 'monsterized' them. Their jaws do not lock, they do not have the bite strength of a crocodile, they have no stronger a jaw than any other dog, they can not hold their breath for 20+ minutes, they DO feel pain, they can't 'bite with the front teeth and chew with the back' ....

these are all common old myths/legends that surround the pit bull, the most infamous of course ' the locking jaw' and the 'strongest bite force of any other dog' - both untrue. Pit bulls are EXACTLY like other dogs, unless science is wrong and they don't derive from the gray wolf like all other dog breeds, and are actually some moster/alien dog breed

pit bulls have the same skull and jaw as a chihuahua or a collie. Pit bulls have no stronger a bite force than the other large breed dogs.

I am sorry if I have come accross with a breed bias against Pitties or other such breeds. I actually love the dogs. Some of my best and favorite clients have been mixes and purebred pits. My real reason I posted here was to try and get people to stop saying that "its all in the training" because that is hooey. Training, as I said before, compliments or exaggerates good genetics and temperament. In the same breath poor training exastorbates/exaggerates poor temperament and genetics.

My grandmother was a dog breeder her whole life. It was her primary source of income for decades. Over the years she specialized in several breeds including GSD and Karelian Bear Dog. One of my all time favorite dogs of hers was a Pit Bull. Her name was Punky. Punky had a flawless temperament. She was gentle with ALL children, a defender of her territory, non- dog aggressive, and an excellent discerner of people. I thnk, in all my time of knowing dogs and especially in the interest of dogs working for people, she was the best naturally temperamented dog I have ever known -- hands down.

Punky was an outside dog only, never trained in anything. Never was taught to sit, or walk on a leash. She was the only dog on my grandmothers property (this includes her several GSDs) that would reliably guard the home. Punky warded off several theives, and even challenged my older sister. Lola actually corrected her ONE time for growling at her and Punky got the message and never did it again. What I am spelling out here is the dog had an exceptional natural temperament. Not trained, not guided. She was a dog I respected above all others. She was, in my opinion, an amazing animal.

Pitties can be wonderful. Pitties can be terrible. Same goes for all the other breeds, well known and not, that I have had the priveledge to handle and train over the years.

All dogs can have unstable temperament, all dogs can have very bad hidden temperament flaws. Just do your homework and be smart. Every dog has aggression as a form of communication. Every dog can bite, every dog can harm. Not every dog is a good companion. Not every dog is good with kids, not every dog that is NOT good with kids will bite. Not every dog trained to defend will defend.

Not every owner is as smart as they think, some are smarter than I have given credit for as well. Not every owner deserves the dog they get.

This site (link) is VERY biased against pits and rotties... if you can overlook some of that, there are very interesting statistics. There are also horrifying stories and photos, so read with care

Ya know the GREAT thing about this thread... I can tell that we ALL love doggies... or folks wouldnt be so passionate about their feelings.
So that should bring us all together...

I hate stereotypes period. As Cesar calls them, "red zone" breeds are usually my favorite.

I read a study somewhere that said that (I don't want to try to remember the number exactly) a alarmingly high amount of "pit attack" cases are mis-identified dogs that are not even in the slightest "pits".

Historically, people said German Shepherds were killers. Boxers used to be used as fight dogs and got a really bad rep at one point too. I have owned two of both and the best dogs I ever had. The worst dogs are the little tiny ankle biters... I still will care for one that needs a human to treat it right, but given a choice... give me a "red zone" breed anyday. Most the time they are sweet and LOYAL. I like knowing that my big lap baby will be able to rip your arm off if you try to hurt me.
My two boxer babies, as I call them, are well sociallized and only twice did they growl at someone (two people on two different occassions). Both times I was hiking and in the deep woods of southern Appalacia by myself. I took precaution because of it... they probrably saved my life. I'm a young female and this was a middle age man (the first incedent). He was comming toward me on the trail and passed me and the boxers. They growled and snarled at him and I walked, almost ran, in the direction I was going (at that point it wsa the fastest way out of the woods with 3 more miles to go). I got a bit winded and slowed down thinking I was pretty safe. I was in a high spot that doubled back so you could see the trail below (from where you just came). Can you believe I saw that same guy going, now, my direction! He was probrably 5-10 minutes behind me. I, of course, kept moving at a fast pace and also had pulled a knife out and kept it in my hand open and ready. I made it to the road and kept my quick pace and made it back to the parking lot where there were tourist picnicing. Out of curiousity, since I felt safe with people around in sight. I waited in my car a few minutes and that man showed up a few minutes after me. He looked at me and he freaked me out. He was then sweating like he was working to catch up or something. Now, what do you take of that?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but I'm a firm believer in powerful breeds being the best friend you could ever have. Especially if you are a single young female who likes to do things crazy like go off the grid for miles into nowhere.
