I had no idea predators are such a big factor in the raising of chickens.
Everything we do in regards to their indoor and outdoor coops/pens has foxes, coyotes, dogs, etc. in mind. It's so frustrating. Two weeks ago I was cleaning their coops and turned around in time to see a strange dog running down the drive with my black silky in his mouth. Apparently I yelled loud enough and the stupid thing dropped the chicken and ran. Feathers everywhere but I got the dog pretty good with a rock on the way off our property. The silky lost a toe but other than that we were lucky. I'm considering a gun. Our guys have to be kept in coops in the garage at night, and when I go to work during the day they're stuck in there til someone gets home. I feel for them , not getting out all day. Thank goodness I work at a school and am out for the summer so they get some quality outdoor time with the ducks. I love dogs but jeez...
