In an emergency, is it safe to eat the geese at my local park?

And I very much doubt that most modern people can tell an edible berry from a poisonous one!

For me, it partly depends on whether it's still hanging on the plant. If it looks like a blackberry or raspberry, and I get stuck with a bunch of thorns while trying to get it, then it's probably edible--no other reason for the plant to be so prickly about it!

And I've seen enough strawberries in the grocery store to be pretty sure of recognizing them too.

I do wish that eating cats & dogs was not so unthinkable in this country  When there are too many of any kind of animal, and it could be safely eaten by humans, the solution seems obvious to me (stray cats, unwanted dog breeds in shelters, also deer in some areas, and ex-pet potbelly pigs...) Because I have never actually eaten dog or cat, I am also curious how it tastes, but not curious enough to actually do anything about it.
Personally I don’t want to eat a dog or cat but I don’t understand why some people feel the need to be so rude about the idea. There is No such thing as “animals you can and cannot eat” the only time that could apply is to obviously poisonous things or things that can actually harm you. If it’s not poisonous you could technically eat anything:confused: Now if you do have a dog or cat as a pet like I do I understand why you wouldn’t want to eat it but do not be rude about that idea to others just say “it’s a no from me”.

What is this scenario exactly? What is causing our imaginary world to end so suddenly?

What do you suggest we eat, then?

Obviously animals and wild plants (if anyone knows how to forage) but we should farm them. Confined breeding is quicker than hunting anyway.

That's probably true. but how any of us nowadays can recognise plantain and sorrel and violets?

I'm actually really enjoying this thread it's so funny!

PETA is rascist😨 Oh no Ma’am.

You clearly haven't seen their ads equating farming to the holocaust, slavery, lynching and various forms of genocide. I'm afraid that comparing human beings of specific races, genetics or cultural identities to farm animals is SPECIFICALLY and unquestionably racist. Dehumanizing people based on their genetic makeup or cultural background to the point that they are viewed as the same as livestock is AWFULLY hard to interpret any other way. :p PETA is garbage.

@OP, in the end of the world the geese would make a great meal but I agree with what the others have said about penning them and breeding them. You could have your own domesticated flock at the end of the world and it would be much more sustainable. You would want to cook them through to kill parasites and bacteria but that's true of even domestic meat. If your concern is something else, like - for example - heavy metals in the meat, no amount of cooking will remove that. You just gotta roll with it.

Having said that. Finding an abandoned flock of chickens and penning those up is probably easier than all of this IMO.

Ok, if its the end of the world, and you get to the point where you want to eat trash-eating geese, then why would you have the time to make a pen, catch them (assuming you can find a male and female), wait for them to lay a clutch of eggs, wait almost a month for them to hatch, then at least 2 or 3 months for the offspring to be big enough to eat. This process does take quite a bit more time than hunting. This is all theoretical, of course.

Unless you already have an established flock of anything or cows, pigs, sheep, we’d probably have to resort back to hunting gathering🙄
