IN with the old... OUT with the new!

its sad that we live in a disposable world now, everything is made cheap to throw away and buy new. Things are not made like they use to be. Back in the day if it broke you fix it, now if it breaks we have to throw it away, very sad to see this... yes i'm sounding like an old fogy too :old those good old games gone, replaced with electronics
I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way! It's hardly worth fixing anything these days. Replacement parts cost just as much as a whole brand new "whatever-it-is." Electronics and software are the worst of all... it doesn't even matter how well you take care of them, companies will just decide not to support or update their old systems and you have no choice but to buy new.

:rantIt is like they make things cheap....so they break...so you buy new....so they make $. :(
To heck with a good reputation...just buy more junk...it is all junk...at least the junk that you HAD and have to replace you learned it's fail points.....unlike any other brand/model of similar junk...that you will have to figure out all over again. :rant

If you ask me this world has a few to many gadgets with extra buttons.
:old
YES! Pride of craftsmanship has taken a backseat to cheapskate manufacturers and greedy retailers who don't care about anything as long as they make a quick buck before their business tanks. Consumers just eat it up anyway and perpetuate the cycle.

One of my best "vintage" possessions is my computer keyboard - ok, not that vintage, but considering how fast people use up technology nowadays, it's pretty old. It's just a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard made around 1998-ish, but it has outlived 4 or 5 computers by this point. None of the keys stick, wobble or pop off, all the letters on it are completely clear and not rubbed off (an issue with newer keyboards). The only sign of age on it is the number lock light is very dim from having been on for 20 years. Meanwhile hubby has to replace his keyboards every 2 - 3 years because keys break or get stuck or all the letters just rub off.
Yes, I have a serious love-hate relationship with electronics. My first laptop, a 2001 ibook, was the best computer I ever owned. It never had a single glitch or problem in 10 years when I finally had to get a new one for graphic design school. Now I've gone through about 3 more since then and I would probably still be using my original one if it was still supported... and if I didn't spill coffee on the keyboard. :( I miss it so much.

I only like vehicles that are older. Newer vehicles break a lot or malfunction. I'm only 32 and I like vehicles that are older than me!
What kind do you have? My first car was a '77 Toyota Celica, 5 sp manual transmission, no power steering or AC and had vinyl seats. It was awesome! Until someone crashed into me and totaled it. Sad times.

I don't think there are any vehicles that are older than I am.. unless a horse & buggy still count.
Horse and buggy is the best kind!!

I used to love typewriters - at least it left me with a knowledge of keyboards. There are things I can type (correctly) with my eyes closed. Just have to start with the correct fingers in the "home position." Think that is the only thing of merit I took away from high school.

:lauI swear that is the same game of sorry that is still in my parents basement somewhere! My sisters and I had big fun with board games...back before wifi :gig
lol Board games are so much better than screen time in my book. Guess I'm feeling nostalgic and want my daughter to have some of the same fun family memories I have. Of course my dad was a ruthless opponent and he never let me win and I always cried, but at least he taught me how to strategize and I finally became better than him. Winning was a true victory. I feel like I'm a little soft as a parent.

:frowHowdy ol'timers :old I still have a very old monopoly in the garage, was my favorite, i don't even wanna say how old it is. Then there was Trouble and Uno.
Cant beat the good old games, got the family together, now all the kids have their heads glued to iphones ect... who talks on the phone anymore its all texting now.
:oldHubby and I still using old pc with windows xp :lau screens bigger to see with, just lucky hubby can fix it when something goes wrong but will have to upgrade oneday.
Oh I remember Trouble! I think I might have to do another ebay search. We have the new version of Uno and my daughter loves it.
I'm hosting Thanksgiving and my dad and I were thinking of making everyone drop their phones in a basket before dinner, to keep us all focused as a family and have actual conversations. I wonder how that would go :lau
Yep, you'll have to upgrade soon. My mom is still using the oldest version of Windows XP. She was notified recently it'll no longer be supported after the first of the year and she'll lose all her stuff if she doesn't upgrade, which she has no idea how to do, and neither do I. That's what my IT data systems analyst (don't even know correct job title) husband is for. He's the computer nerd and I'm the handyman. (handygirl?)

Also someone gave me a small Lava lite, made to connect to the computer. I think I used it once or twice, It's been sitting neglected ever since.

Somethings are precious and some are not. Had the dog's bladder stones in a pill bottle, eventually threw them out. He didn't want them back.

But, have a collection of puppy teeth from the last litter back in 1980 , they are keepers.
:lau:highfive: I have a collection of animal teeth too!! Teeny tiny puppy and kitten teeth...I keep them in a drawer of my jewelry box...my husband thinks I'm strange:hugsglad I'm not alone!!

Also, while you're searching ebay for fun board games...dont forget Connect Four!! The original! They still make it, but they've added all sorts of stuff to it. My dad enjoyed that game and never let us win on purpose!
Thank you for this thread...brings back wonderful memories for me!!
