Incandescent Light Bulb Ban...

I hadn't heard about any ban before so I went a searching. The incandescent bulbs are not being banned outright, just that congress has set new standards for bulbs. And the kicker is that current incandescent bulbs do not meet that standard. So either new technology or CFLs.
I started switching out to CFLs years ago, I despise switching out bulbs. And the "old" bulbs always go out at the most inconveient time. (For me it was ALL the time). I find the CFLs look the same in fixtures, and that slight annoying delay in lighting has almost disappeared. Also I never pay $3 per bulb. I wait for sales and/or coupons and giveaways from the utility co. and stock up. I pay between 25 cents to 75 cents each. Now I only change a bulb maybe 1x or 2x per year, except for the incandescent decorative bulbs in the kitchen fixture. Those I still have to change those 7 about every 3 months. Those fixture are headed for the garbage soon.

FYI- Seems like a lot of the rest of the world does have or are starting outright bans.

Ugh! I hate flourescent lighting. Can't stand it! I do have some cfls in the basement, but I have changed them out quite a few times - they haven't proven to be worth the extra money for us. Oh yeah, DO NOT dim a cfl!! Dimming these bulbs can cause them to start on fire!

In order to stay on topic here

I'd just go with a bunch of broody girls

definitely more reliable than any light bulb or the electric company

In the US, incandescent bulbs will be phased out between 2012 and 2014. The first ones to be discontinued are at the 100w and larger. Then go the lesser wattage bulbs. The law has been passed during the Bush years... http://www.metaefficient.com/news/us-to-phase-out-incandescent-light-bulbs.html

So
, hopefully, bulb manufacturers will come with an acceptable replacement. But CFL's are not such for me. I continue to stockpile until I hit a ten year supply; which really isn't that many bulbs. Failure to be able to make the bulbs to a newer standard equals an outright ban.

I have installed and used some CFLs and dated their installation as an experiment. Except for one location in the garage that is on 24/7/365 which has excellent life, the maximum life is around 2 years so far in our house. If I mix the bulbs to where the CFL light is more than 33%, the strain on the eyes is unacceptable.

Even if they ban "standard incandescent' bulbs, I bet there will still be heat bulbs available at pet supply stores, etc. All the restaurants will still need them to keep food warm too!

If all else fails there are still the ceramic bulb heat emitters that come in lots of different watts.

I fully agree! I have been using CFL's, and while that's fine for lights I have to have on all the time, I do think they are saving on the bill, but for lights I need to seriously see by, they stink. Time to hoard bulbs!

I think the ban on incandescents is foolish, because there are many cases where people want both light and heat. They only waste energy if you don't want the heat. The people pushing the ban never considered that heat isn't always a waste. (In my house, for example, we only need extended lighting during the winter.)

For this application, we want heat, not light, so replacement bulbs are exactly wrong. That said, there will always be heat lamps, it's just that they will have to be specifically for heat rather than light.

Never had much luck with CFL bulbs. I have had many go out prematurely so they are more expensive
than any savings they might bring. The ones on my outside light poles exploded while it was cold.
There isn't a recycling thing for them here so when I called waste management they told me to
just throw them in the trash to be sent to the dump. The cheap GE cfl that produces a yellow
hue gives me migraines.

I'm guessing I will use a ceramic infrared heater in the brooder and add another thing
for lighting.
