Have fun with winter prep!! glad you got them moved!  let me know how they react today!!

Everyone seems to be adjusting pretty well in their new digs yesterday and today. The girls are taking to the nestboxes well and I didn't have much of a drop off in production yesterday, thankfully. We have so many orders for eggs and don't have enough layers so I'd really like to hatch another group after this hatch, but the cold weather on the way is giving me second thoughts. I still haven't decided if I should bring these babies due Friday straight out to the brooder or keep them inside for a few days. (Highs 30's, lows 26 forecast over the weekend here) I use a Premier brooder heat plate which the babies love to snuggle under and have an insulated coop and raised brooder...but I haven't used it in ambient temps under freezing yet so..I dunno...guess I need to decide pretty soon lol.

Did my pre-lockdown candling last night- looks like I have 4 Marans out of the 8 (shipped) started that have made it to lockdown today. My air cells were smaller than I would have liked so I'm going to keep my humidity low (its at 35 now on a calibrated hygro) for a little while longer but I've stopped turning and am watching closely for movement or pips in case I need to get humidity up asap.
My 2 flock babies in the still air hovabator look awesome. I saw movement!! Yay! Those 2 lockdown tomorrow. :weee

I will post some pics of my air cells from the Marans in just a minute...gotta switch back to my phone...

ETA: No idea why my post showed up in Sally's quote. I must have done something wrong lol

Ok here are the air cells for my day 18 Marans. All look pretty much like this.

I've run the Brinsea with no water the entire time. It's been in the 32-50 range dependent on the humidity in the house.

I can't believe how much I've missed since yesterday early evening on the thread! I've got to go get caught up now... :)

Lookin good!

I checked mine this morning after just 12 hours and its reading 28% dry. I hate to add water, but probably gonna have to, since these are ducks. I dont like them that low.

Don't know whether this would work or not, but perhaps it will get someone's creative juices going:

As I mentioned to Sally a couple days ago, when I was breeding bird dogs we always tried for winter litters. One of the dog supply houses started marketing eletric "nest warmers" (for lack of the proper name...been a lot of years since those days). Anyhow, it was a shallow pan, similar to a wok, that was set into a hole in the floor of the dog box. The idea, obviously, was for the dog to whelp her pups in the heated pan. The power cord was routed outside the box and (in my case, anyway) plugged into a heavy duty exterior extension cord.

I don't know if these, or something similar, are still made, or if they are/were available in smaller sizes, but they may be worth checking out for those in colder climates.
