A heating pad in the barrel might work very well, Miss Sally. But it kinda seems like overkill to me and what I do, which is to keep things as simple as possible. I just build the cave in an open wire pen and leave 'em alone. I know, baaaad momma! But they forgive me - they still like me - and they sure do like being chickens from day one! They learn so much from watching the adults all around them, and the adults are so used to them that we have total integration by the time the chicks are 4 weeks old. I like simple - I'm old and it works for me!
And it doubles as a broody pen by just taking the cave out and putting her nest in.
Don't have any adorable photos of a chick with a hot mug....and Scout has been shown on BYC lots of times before so it wouldn't be a good entry for the contest. But I'm gonna share anyway - so how about a good lookin' chick in a hot tub?
