INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

In case anyone missed the note in one of my earlier posts today or yesterday, we have LOTS of quail eggs! Chloe just steamed (hardboiled) 6 dozen and there's still another 3 dozen in the fridge. We collected 12 today. She decided to go ahead and make some as deviled eggs to take to Rabbit Club banquet tomorrow night and then make egg salad with the rest. Yummy! Again, if anyone wants to try fresh quail eggs and you live within driving distance of Goshen, please

PM me so we can share the bounty! We also listed them on craigslist, but haven't had any contacts yet.
Some years back when I raised Coturnix quail, I pickled some. They were pretty good. I passed out a bunch of them at the office where I worked at the time.

I don't remember how I did it, but I'm sure there is something on the internet. You might want to try that. You can use up a lot of hard-boiled quail eggs in making a quart of pickled eggs. Pickled, they will last forever.

Yeah, you can use pickled beet juice to make pickled eggs -- Mom did that when we were kids. However, John, you're missing that I don't want them to last forever cause there's a whole lot more comin' tomorrow!!

 OH thats not cool! Are they going to replace them? If they don't I would sure hit him/her on the feedback!
Or is it a private seller...
Super excited, setting up the bator tonight with the quail rails. That will still leave me 3 regular rails for eggs. :lau
I think your eggs will make it here safe and sound!
Thats the best method I have seen too, as long as the ends are open they hatch very well.
No it was an eBay auction. Opened a claim this evening because seller wasn't going to do anything. We will see what eBay does after they give seller a chance to reply back.

I checked the tracking and its not showing anything on the eggs. They were dropped at PO this morning and they even scanned it. Wonder why it's not showing anything on their website?

Ok, I love this cooler weather but it is horrible for my allergies. I am literally showing Kleenex up my nose like ear plugs to stop from sneezing. 1 Zyrtec and 2 Benadryls later, no change. Going to be a long night.....

When you have a few dozen cases of quarts of pickled quail eggs in your basement, you will be set for the zombie attack, if you have an equal amount of guns, ammo, and other stuff. Don't forget tinfoil for hats.

Alternately, you could crack open 2 or 3 dozen and make scrambled eggs for your family breakfast, if your family is small.

I visited with an Amish family today and the man told me to sprinkle a tiny bit of cayanne pepper flakes on my chickens feed to aid then in laying. Has anyone ever heard of this ? I love stopping at Amish farms! What a way to live! If only.....

have heard that too, hope someone knows more about it.

For the nest box I put down a thin layer of wood ash right on the bottom (deters lice/mites) then wood shavings, then grass clippings like Sally says. I also put some dried herbs in the grass that are also lice/mite deterrents.

The chickens LOVE the grass. It looks nice, and smells nice - even without the herbs.

Been at the state fair for the last couple of days, so just skimming through the posts. Have to go this afternoon to pick up my chickens; they're released at 5:00.

My WCB bantam Polish had best of breed and reserve best for about ten minutes, then the judge realized he'd missed some pullets on the other side. Oh well, the judge giveth and the judge taketh away! I had told my sis earlier that those pullets were going to be my competition--they were really nice. My polish were in various stages of molting and I debated whether even to take them.

There are a lot of good birds there, but there are some really poor ones also. I was surprised that some weren't disqualified as they weren't what the owners said they were, such as some labeled as WCB polish that were mottled all over. And there were some LF Brahmas that looked (and smelled!) like they were sick, and they were still judged. We had to show our health papers stating that our birds had been tested for P-T, yet there were birds there with obvious other health problems. This was my first time showing there, and not sure that I'll do it again.

Oh well, 'nuff venting. On the plus side, the staff was great at keeping an eye on the visitors and making sure that the chickens all had food and water; I'm used to doing that myself at shows. And as always at shows I got to mingle with some great people, both other exhibitors and visitors as well as take in some other features at the fair.
I have never showed birds, I would get frustrated too. I love meeting other chicken people tho! Hoping to make the fairs next year, just been too crazy here lately

Quote: LOL sounds like some very poor excuses to me.

I finally went out last night and took some current pictures of some of the girls. They all range from 16-20 weeks, and are just getting their combs and tail feathers. I asked for some nice poses, but all I got was a bunch of SPOILED girls demanding garden scraps!

"Nevermind HER--take MY picture!"

"Does THIS make my beak look big?"

"Whaddya bring me?"

(MsJackson from her 'Nasty Boys' days)

FINALLY-- a NICE picture. This is Aretha, our 20-week old Cream Legbar. She's laid 13 goregous blue eggs eggs so far.
Lovely birds!

Ahhhhh! found myself hanging out at Riley Hospital for the night. DH had his original heart surgery here, so we come if anythings up. he told me he felt like his heart was racing since last night... yeah, he tells me right before he left for work. well, now he's admitted with A-Fib and getting meds to slow it, if it doesnt fix itself by 7 am he gets a cardioversion (shock). he's not happy. anyway... chicken news... how long after breaking a broody will they lay again?
Oh my, my thoughts are with you and DH.
hugs.gif
thats pretty scary.
I broke my EE after about a month, she was back to laying a few days later. now theres 2 BA and one of my oldest GLW hen hogging boxes and being physco attack vultures!
I grab them off the boxes several times a day till they give up. (Welders gloves on first!) I even took away the golf balls.

Lol pginsber your close ups are cracking me up!

I ate my first duck egg today. Ok first of all it was nearly impossible to crack and then the membrane was super strong. Those are serious eggs! It was a little... Ummm ... Eggier than chicken eggs? Good though. I read they have twice the nutrition as chicken eggs. I had no idea! I think will mostly use them in baking though. I heard they are great for that. And I bet they'd make a really good quiche!

My oldest DD loves baked goods with them, she is a cook at a nursing home. She does the desserts, and hates baked goods made with chicken eggs at work now.
She is the first one to check eggs in the morning and writes "MINE HANDS OFF" on the duck egg box

They have slowed way down laying too, she is NOT happy.

I still haven't got mine set up, yup it will be winter before I get to it

think I want to do the PVC pipe version with the water buckets outside the coop & run. If I can get it done before winter I may at least try it out.
Wow. I've seen everyone posting about how hard it is to keep up, and they aren't kidding. Been busy at work at home and suddenly 200 posts behind!

Whoever was asking about Solar/Electric fencing. I got all my stuff at www.premier1supplies.com but I will warn you, it isn't cheap. It was my major investment for the flock this year.

We are planning on going to the fair tomorrow night. Will there still be birds there? I'll be disappointed if I missed them.

Sally - you said your chickens won't use the nipple waterer? Do they have another source of water? All of my birds use my nipple waterer, but they stop using it if it rains, and they have mud puddles to drink out of instead. I bought a set of the little poultry cups to try, but haven't managed to find the time to set them up.

Our egg layers are really ramping up now. We went from about a dozen eggs a week over the last couple of weeks, to a dozen eggs in the last two days. I think my polish just joined the layers. She was in the nest box with a really warm egg when I checked them. She looked kinda dazed, but now that I think on it, that's her normal look..... She even let me scratch her crest. I think laying it wore her out.

Hope everyone has a good week, it's really busy for me right now, but I'll check in when I can.

Hopefully things will settle down a bit for you soon.

Violet R.I.P

Yesterday the veterinarian's office was closed half the day for meetings and today they didn't even have a vet working! So today I called Dr. Gormley at Highland Clinic because I read recently that he has a wild bird rehab clinic. I was still hoping that maybe Violet just needed her leg wrapped or something could be done. She had been trying to stand and looked so happy when I'd hold her up to standing position. However, the vet said that there wasn't anything that could be done for her because her leg and locked into a position that couldn't be changed (he used medical terms, but that's what he meant). So... I had him give her the big shot. He only charged me half for the office visit ($30) and didn't charge for the anesthetic, which was very nice of him. I took her home, sobbing of course, and laid her down near Adeline. Lauren and I, both sobbing, watched Adeline look at Violet. It didn't help that I had just read this:

Like us, chickens form friendships and strong family ties. They love their young and mourn the loss of loved ones.

According to animal behaviorist Dr. Chris Evans, chickens are as smart as mammals, including some primates. He explains that chickens are able to understand that recently hidden objects still exist, which is beyond the capacity of small children. Furthermore, Dr. Joy Mench, professor and director of the Center for Animal Welfare at the University of California at Davis explains, "Chickens show sophisticated social behavior. They can recognize more than a hundred other chickens and remember them. They have more than thirty types of vocalizations."

Adeline has been calling Violet, which is so sad. I buried Violet in my new landscaping in the front. : - ) Lauren and I took Adeline and the new chocolate bantam outside in the front while we ate dinner. They took dust baths and peck around under bushes. That was nice to see. This evening, Adeline allowed bantam (haven't had time to name her) be in the cage with her, but not too close. Now I have to leave them tomorrow to move Lauren to IU! My son Max will be here to take care of them and my hens in the evening and morning. I guess I'm going to go ahead and keep them in the dog kennel (in the living room) to get acquainted more before moving them outside in their small coop next to the hens' coop. Btw, I love my Shark hand held steam cleaner (Bed, Bath, & Beyond) -- it's great for quickly sterilizing things like cages, cat carriers, coops-- and about anything else.

I guess it will be good to get away for a couple of days and then when I return I can work on acquainting them with my five hens.

Glad you posted that, all of us are coughing, sore throat, etc. I was worried it may be colds, but really think its allergies too. If I use the real sudaphed, and 2 benadryl it seems to help a little.
I even had to get the mucinex stuff. DH couldn't hardly catch his breath he was sneezing and coughing so much and none of it was breaking up.

I have filed on 2 sellers and won, got my money back (one was for ramshorn snails for my oscars, all DOA. the other computer parts)
Other than that, most sellers try to make it good usually.
Those people that won't even try to be fair really make me angry! So far I haven't had to file on any eggs.
I noticed that too on the tracking #, It may be delivery conformation only, will check tomorrow too.
