Ccccccchickens - so sorry of the loss of your orloff .
we had our 2nd loss about a week ago - a neighbor around the corner (1/2 mile away) had his 2 dogs get loose & of course they thought it would be a fun toy to play with - every tail feather was gone - we treated some of the bite wounds, but she died 2 hours later.

Also, on the talk about turkeys a few pages back, whoever posted that link to the turkey site--enabler!

How do turkeys do in a flock with chickens? Do the toms become human aggressive and can they be a danger to chicken hens? Also, how much space do they need? (Oh, no, now I'm going to need another coop..!)

I don't have any Toms, but I have two full sized BBB, 2 young royal palms and a young Bourbon Red. My BBB's were brought in at the same time as the first of my chickens, so they grew up together. The younger turkeys are timid and know their place! Most of the time everyone gets along. Once in awhile I'll see one of the older girls chase a chicken and and sometimes grab some feathers, so they get a little kick in the tail feathers. **Not hard, just a little one so they know they did wrong and remember who's boss, just like my DD always says!

I think the 2 BBB's are more annoying to me than the chickens because they follow me around like minions and stop and sit right in front of the mower and sometimes they kind of sneak up on me when I am filling the feeders and they are basically standing or sitting right behind me and I back up and almost fall...

I think it all depends on how you raise them. I always see where people say to keep them separated, but I threw them all together anyway. So far no serious problems.

Pipd - also, I forgot to mention, I know a lot of people have coops and runs for their turkeys. I do not. They free range 24/7. My dad's idea was to let them decide whether they wanted to venture out in the woods or whatever.

They roost on top of the chicken coop every night. I have lost chickens to a raccoon (which we did not relocate...not with my sharp shooter father around...((we lost 12 chicks/pullets in 2 nights)) but I haven't lost a turkey. I think that even though we feed them and they are "backyard" turkeys, they still have some wild instincts.

And I just saw this will be my 50th post. Finally!

We tried for 6 weeks to break our young broody without success.
18 days ago, we relented, and got 3 hatching eggs from Vickichicki. (Thanks, Vicki!)
Aretha has been a good sitter. Hope she's just as good of a mom.

So I'm thinking one of my on a 2 month laying strike molty oldies started laying again. Got three whoppers this week (ouch, must have seriously hurt to pop those out!). Here are some pictures of one of them sitting next to jumbo sized eggs. My total noob guess is that they have been "cooking in the oven" for such a long time while she was molting, they got really large. Is that really what happens or did a T-Rex sneak in the coop and lay a dinosaur egg? Also, I am thinking it is either my Barred Rock or Welsummer, which of those breeds lays this color and which lays the speckled eggs? Just trying to figure out who is finally back to laying! Our egg production has been miserable since getting them in late July. After adding 7 more hens we are finally slowly creeping up in numbers, but are still only getting 2 or 3 a day (out of 10 hens). Boo!

So my turkey hen made her nest 3 days ago and this is what she's been giving me since. The smaller egg is her first and was found in the run. Her second egg was in her nest laid after 4 pm and I found it at dinner time so 5:30 ish

That's one of the Rose of Sharon bushes

I've heard turkey eggs are great for baking, hmm now what to make? Are they as good for breakfast though? I guess I will find out if they are fertile too.

Congrats on the break in the laying dry spell! Those big ones look like double-yolkers. Yummy!
We have a barred rock pullet that lays brown eggs with some darker brown speckles on one end. Maybe that's the same for yours.
We've not been hit by the molting dry spell yet. We're getting 5 eggs a day from 6 hens. I don't want to jinx myself...we keep thinking our supply will dry up any day, just like everybody else's has.
Fingers crossed for you that the rest of your girls get to laying again soon!

Here's a pic with my largest chicken egg. Her smallest egg weighed 68 grams, next is my largest Chicken egg weighing 74 grams. Her egg yesterday weighed 96 grams. I don't have any ducks for comparison, nor have I seen any duck eggs lol. Hope the weights help. These are my first turkey eggs also, so I have no clue how big they will get.
