As for a national lottery, getting more money in to the system isn't the problem. It's all the money going OUT. Giving them more money at this point is completely foolish.

Actually the problem is on both ends. They need to stop giving tax breaks to the wealthy and do a better job of controlling medical cost and freebie programs to people that don't need it. Those that do need it should still get it.

We don't have much choice on the wars. As long as all the funding to support alternative energy resource research is locked up we will need more and more oil. It's an endless vicious circle with no easy solutions. From the bottom to the top nobody wants to pull their weight. They just want to complain about everyone else and misdirect everyone's attention.

At any rate I am willing to admit I am not an economist. Obviously nobody else that has posted here is an economist either. Anyone else willing to admit it? The people you all (myself included) listen to on TV and the radio are or read on some homegrown website are also not economist. Even if they were everything they say is just speculation or flat out lies to manipulate people.

So do what you can with what you got and try not to vote us into a deeper hole than we are already in. At least someone finally managed to direct some attention to Osama Bin Laden. At least the original bad guy is finally dead. Maybe that will save 5.00 a month or so.

X2 Never throw money at a money managing problem!

what we need are good, old school stereotypical strait laced roman catholic nuns with rulers in Washington. every time one of our polititions in power start to misappropriate money, the nun smacks their hand " No! that's bad!"

I am sorry, but those politicians would be beat to a bloody pulp by those nuns, and they would still be trying to misuse the people's money.

As for reducing the size of government and cutting spending, I have never seen a cancer put itself into remission. It just isn't going to happen.

I would like to see a source of revenue that they could not touch. It probably would take a constitutional amendment, and that might not work either.

Politicians get elected by telling people what they can do for them; then when they get to Washington, they do things to those people.

Phooey!

Who has to be an economist to figure this out-- income in, expenditures out!! It is not rocket science to balance a budget. Needs first, wants later with what's left.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion then, what is needs and what is wants? Make a list and send it to Washington. Then they can just hit the gavel and all go home. You're right, it's easy peasy.

you mean when congress kept raiding it.

it had a surplus at one time. a huge one

then congress raided it multiple times, claiming it would replenish.

then the people who payed into it all their lives started retiring or getting sick.

but congress's ability in math sucks.

For what a person pays into it and the paltry benefits that are paid out you could invest that money elsewhere and get a better return. Yes I mean before it was raided when it was used for its original purpose.
