You won't hurt my feelings whatever you say as I am told I have none by some.

Dunkopk you and I are not that dissimilar really I believe in helping the fellow man or woman or kid but we differ on how and what is really helping them or enabling them. I do not believe it is the Governments job to wholly support otherwise able bodied people because they have painted themselves in a corner regardless of the size of brush.

I actually do watch FOX on occasion and CNN and MSNBC but admittedly I do not watch that much of it I actually read a lot of online local newspapers from various areas and countries (when I was in school they taught us to read) and I only need to talk to my neighbors to see what is happening in the U.S. we are going broke and if the Government could not print money and abides by the same rules it's citizens live by it would be flat broke.

This is actually a very good thread and if you keep it civil everyone benefits and as a socialist (or so you seem sometimes so don't take it too hard) you should approve of that, eh?

You do indeed have a broad brush. You are certainly entitled to your opinions. I'm not dreaming of any utopias. I realize that there are many like you that have a strictly me first mentality. That's ok too. Fortunately there are many that are willing to help out others without a bunch of strings attached. I have already stated that our entitlement systems need to be revamped. Some people have very selective hearing though and don't listen to that. Instead they accuse me of wanting some unrealistic utopia.

I know you will claim that you never watch the garbage on Fox or listen to any of the talking heads, but you sound just like them. IMO you should do a little research on both sides and figure out what is really happening in the USA. Take those blinders off and figure it out.

I'm going to bow out now. If I say what needs to be said one of you will surely have your feelings hurt and I'll get a time out. So please continue on amongst yourselves. May you learn the true meaning of WWJD and try to practice that in your daily lives.

I will try to stay civil if others will do so in kind.

I don't mind the term Socialist. I know the difference between a socialist and a communist. I don't believe in full socialism though. Our primary difference lies in the fact that the Tea Party which I believe you all support wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I want to throw out the bathwater and try to let the baby live.

I feel that socialist style medicine is a good thing. It's not something I particularly look forward to, but I realize that it's the only way the country will stay alive. We are not a country that would allow our people to die in the streets over lack of basic healthcare. Therefore hospitals will always be required to help those that need it and this will drive our country broke. Eventually people will accept that there is no other choice. Single payer is the only viable option.

Welfare and food stamps are in need of drastic overhaul with better oversite. Unfortunately the oversight would probably cost more than the program does. The obvious solution is to put the recipients to work. Problem is that those jobs they could do are being taken by others that used to work in factories and the building trades. Some places still have a lot of low skill jobs available. Most places don't. I don't see those jobs becoming abundant anytime soon.

SS and Medicare. Both very expensive programs. Once again socialized medicine would take care of medicare. What to do about old people though? Happens to most of us.

It would appear the only solution is to have a country within our country. A country of desperately poor that live on the streets and die on the streets. Those that want to work but can't find work will live in that country along with those that don't want to work. Can't forget the elderly that were not able to save enough money during their life and have selfish kids or no kids. Those that don't want to work can prey on those that can't find work or are elderly without money and no SS or medicare..

The question then is where will that country be located within the USA? I'm a hard worker and have always been employed. I don't want to live in a country where I have to see that kind of poverty every day. I think that most Americans are the same way. That's why we have those hated entitlement programs.

Our politicians need to stop the grandstanding. They know what needs to be done. Time to stop all the falsehoods and get to work. While they're at it they should make it illegal to tell blatant lies on radio and TV. I know they can't do that, but it would sure go a long ways towards getting this country out of the ditch.

I've been a very good girl for months now and have stayed away and kept my mouth shut. But here goes.

Sanity lies in the tensions. Please remember that. There is NO PERFECT SYSTEM. There is no such thing, just as there is no such thing as a perfect person. No matter what system you try humans will take it to the point where they break it and we will have to start anew. So, we need each other, with our opposing points of view to crete and attempt to maintain a system - which we have in our republic - that allows for swings and shifts. A system which creates and encourages the tension.

Here is where the system is currently broken down.
Who should give back? Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart, Bill Gates founded Microsoft, Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer. Which one of these billionaires acquired their wealth by coercing us to purchase their product? Which has taken the property of anyone?

Which has taken the property of anyone? Both Wal-Mart and Microsoft have faced and LOST court cases about anti-trust. In cases, some they lost and some they won, both have been broadly alleged to have have taken quite a bit of other people's work. In most of the cases they lost they not only took other people's work, but illegally used their size to prevent competitors from entering the market. By using their size and their control over the government both kept their behavior under wraps or modestly legal. Note, I did not include Jobs in that.

I am not against big business. I am absolutely not against innovation and self determination. I am against being convinced by massive corporations who are openly using playbooks written by Bernays to manipulate the people into believing things that are not in their own best interest. They did indeed "Coerce" us to purchase their product. Wal-Mart's business plan is to create "loss leaders" in their stores to trick people into thinking they're getting good prices when they are not and to hold down costs until they put local business out of business so the people have no choices. If that is not coercion I am uncertain as to what meaning you are using. We need big thinkers and big business. We need government to help rein in big thinkers when they do what is not in the best interest of the people. We need the people to rein in big government.

We need the tensions. The so called free market is not free at all and currently the government is controlled by the plutocracy which is convincing the rest of you that you need to save the businesses in order to save the country when even the world economic forum ha openly admitted that multinationals do not do what is in the best interest of any country or people or even the planet. That is not the job of business, nor should it be. That is the job of government. It is the job of the people.

Reclaim your power. Jesus did not say the money changers would provide jobs. He did not say we needed to save the rich people so they could keep the gates of heaven open. He did not say judge the poor because maybe they did not try hard enough.

have you considered getting a higher education? I may disagree with a lot of what you say but you are obviously quite intelligent and could do well in any education you choose. You can continue in the job you choose, there is nothing wrong with pursuing education for education's sake, chickened.

I don't think any of us would be hurt by hearing the opinion of others. A free exchange of ideas is the best way to resolve any problem. We are all entitled to our opinions and the right to express those opinions.

When we close our minds to an issue, we are doomed.

That said, I feel that we are in for a very difficult time. No matter who controls the political process, we have to deal with the situation as it is. How we do that will determine the future of our nation.

Unfortunately, probably none of us really have a handle on how that will be done. None of us possess massive wealth or political power. The best we can do is prepare ourselves for what is coming.
