Quote: The stuff at feed stores is Penicillin G Procaine, not Penicillin G Potassium

Another books says this:

And this is my Bible, lol.

Update: Good news and bad news...

The good news is he is up and about, using his leg almost normally now though still showing a lil tenderness, the swelling is nearly gone, and I don't see any new signs of infection.

The bad news is, he is starting to act like a rooster now, lol. Which is great for him, but bad for therapy work. Id still rather see him be a chicken, than be docile and in extreme pain. Im not sure if hes just cranky from being poked and prodded, or if he is starting to feel better and being hurt was the only reason for his calmness. Hes still calm, but did let me know he wanted down while just holding him very clearly, lol.

Today I did a thorough cleaning of his leg/areas surrounding the wounds and packed liberally with triple antibiotic before applying a clean dressing and the vet wrap. Unless I see signs of swelling, drainage, or soiling (which there were very little of when I removed it this morning) I will mess with it as little as possible and just allow it to heal. I think he will be just fine now.

Will update if there are any changes. Thanks again for your help.

Just a quick update...

The roo healed up very well. Swelling all gone and no more signs of infection. Unfortunately, we lost him this morning. I am not sure what happened. We did have a pretty good storm roll through, but he was in the coop so it shouldn't have caused him harm. He was right in front of the door though. Not sure if he was trampled or maybe had a heart attack or what happened. Its a sad day. Especially since he fought so hard to overcome the infection.

Thank you again to all who helped. Hopefully this thread can help others too.

Aww...that's too bad. Maybe he got in a fight with your other males? Since he was feeling better he may have decided to challenge? One other thought, I've read when using antibiotic ointment to make sure it isn't the kind with the pain reliever in it as it can cause some harm. Sorry you lost him.
