International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I m so pleased that Dark Angel is free from the fault .because colour wise he is the best ,plus comb too .
you do not need 100 cockerels . only few but the best of the best of what you produced this year .
next year they progeny will be better .

Dark Angel and Maharaja staying . like this you only have to watch for dark eyes ,very easy and halo hackle . nothing else to worry about .

Please tell me Prince is free .fingers cross .I don t think so ,because Malika s son hasn t got it . Prince and Malika are sibling .

I wish I could tell you he is free from the white underfluff. Unfortunately he has it. :(

Prince has white underfluff under his hackle. Duke has none.. he's completely free from white.

Ah Prince . guess it is not from Duke s .
this fault come from different sire line . Maximus maybe .because some of your hens are a carriers .the Dam of Vortex is one of them .
you have to really zoom in in this faults do not sleep over it .it is a worst thing .trust me . I will allow every other fault except this one and coronation combs .no way .

thanks Duke is free from it . no bad after all .we keep some and we loose some ,it is a way of breeding chooks .

correct me if I m wrong .those cockerels are free from the fault .

I am glad Dark Angel is free from it too. I'm not sure I'll ever remember the name Maharaja though. I was thinking Dark Halo? Two brothers heading up my line this year.. Dark Angel and Dark Halo. Easy to remember. :)

great name both Dark from same sire line .good news Duke is free from it .so they will help you breed it out of your line .
this time you have to mark the chicks ,because you need to thin out the carriers hens .

you will get a new and different sire line from @marchick wen time come .

I m trying to work thing out .
Duke free .
Malika s son Dark Halo is free .
than Queen should be free too .the fault did come from Maximus line I think .I could be wrong .

The only way to find out is to single mate and throw out any females that pass it on, like you said. I am working on single mated pens to mate the two cockerels to multiple females by moving them back and forth. For example:

Dark Angel - Malika
Dark Angel - Jolie (sister)

Dark Halo - Queen
Dark Halo - Duchess

I will pen the hens all separately and move Dark Halo back and forth to Queen and Duchess a few times a week to keep them fertile. I will move Dark Angel back and forth to Malika and Jolie. There may be other females I decide to use as they mature more.

Maximus did have white under his hackles so I am hoping it came from him, but likely some of the females from my line are carrying it too. We shall see I suppose. I'll just have to hard cull for white under the hackles in the males and weed out the carrier females.

Can you guys show me a Blue Copper cockerel with white under fluff and one without?

I culled my oldest blue copper cockerel due to a very high tail and narrow back. I have two more youngsters free ranging so I can take pictures as they molt out of their juvenile plumage. The underfluff should be a light smoky grey, not white.

Nimbus looked to be a very light smoky grey. I think I could have been able to tell better without a super bright light. It made my hands look white. Lol I checked all the others and they where good. I just want to make sure.

I agree - win some, lose some. Three males without the defect are better than none, so I'm happy.

So if the males don't show the white under the hackles, they can't be carriers?

That's great! I don't think the white is an issue with Harvey's birds. That was one of the issues I was trying to fix when he gave me Duke.
