International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I just went back out and checked Queen and Malika for white. Malika doesn't have any at all. Queen has two white primaries in her right wing. So that takes her out of the running sadly. Malika is around a year and a half old now and has went through her adult molt.

Queen had some white in her wing before the molt, and it has persisted. Win some, lose some.

Thank you! But at least there are several pullets free ranging that are looking promising. Queen gave me Malika and likely Dark Angel is her son as well. She hasn't been a waste, even if she isn't perfect.
You have lots of nice ones to pick from. I am going to look at Nimbus again tomorrow. In natural light. Just to make sure. I don't know what I would do if he has white under fluff. I don't have any other options. Here I go worrying again.

Thank you.. I will wait on the pullets to mature more before I pick any out because it's just easier that way. I hate when a bird looks promising, but then doesn't turn out so well when they mature.

Chooks man told us not to worry. Don't worry until you have to, Nimbus is probably fine. As challenges present themselves, we will overcome them as they arise.

The only way to find out is to single mate and throw out any females that pass it on, like you said. I am working on single mated pens to mate the two cockerels to multiple females by moving them back and forth. For example:

Dark Angel - Malika
Dark Angel - Jolie (sister)

Dark Halo - Queen
Dark Halo - Duchess

I will pen the hens all separately and move Dark Halo back and forth to Queen and Duchess a few times a week to keep them fertile. I will move Dark Angel back and forth to Malika and Jolie. There may be other females I decide to use as they mature more.

Maximus did have white under his hackles so I am hoping it came from him, but likely some of the females from my line are carrying it too. We shall see I suppose. I'll just have to hard cull for white under the hackles in the males and weed out the carrier females.

I like the way you thinking . I just have to add because now you are down to 2 working cockerels so you need to do the pairing twice .
the first pairing is the one you mentioned DA X M and DA X J
DH X Q
DH X D
the majority of you chicks will come out of this pairing .

the second pairing swap the cockerel . DA goes with a mature hens this time
and DH goes with true sister .younger stock ,to really dig deep into the make up of the line .this pairing you don t need to hatch a lot .6/8 chicks by hens is enough ,just for testing .

very good base to build a great line .

Nimbus looked to be a very light smoky grey. I think I could have been able to tell better without a super bright light. It made my hands look white. Lol I checked all the others and they where good. I just want to make sure.

good news ,you see my friend you just worry .you don t have too .
natural light is better .

I agree - win some, lose some. Three males without the defect are better than none, so I'm happy.

So if the males don't show the white under the hackles, they can't be carriers?

they can not be carriers if they are not showing it .
a pullets is different story .they don t show it .same like the shoulder colour ,they have the genes but not the expression .

I always keep saying ,a cockerels should be selected recording to they body colour pattern and qualities .
the hens can be selected recording to they body type ,comb ,tail .dark egg .
when we mate those 2 together we will come out with a perfect marans .
Sex linked genes are very tricky and simple in a time to work with .just need the right formula .that all .
doing many pairing is a best way to find a winning pair without speculating .

hold you horse lady .
Queen is old now . don t forget .plus she give birth to Malika s . so she is a proven breeder .need to be mated to DH grand son first to test for any recessive gene, don t just throw out of a breeding program .
don t panic .it is just a fault you need to fix ,no need to throw every thing away .

I will breed queens tell she stop laying eggs if I had her and she gave me Malika .
Malika now gave Dark Halo . I m just trying to high light the qualities Queen possesses
