International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Impacted crop is such a bummer! Sorry for your loss.
Thank you! I had problems with impacted crop before. Not since I stopped putting grass clippings in my pens though. I operated on a white Ameraucana pullet one time as a last resort. She didn't make it though. The green grass clippings was no problem. It was after it dried from putting excess that was the problem. I stopped putting grass clippings and problem solved until now. I hope she is the only one. I need to go out and check everyone before daylight and make sure everyone has empty crops.

she is a silver salmon with a birchen pattern ,that why she look mossy .could be bred to her sire to produce a pure silver salmon pullets ,the cockerels will be hard to produce ,but it is possible .
I like her type .
I like your chooks shed . huge .I don t think you are short of space .

chooks man

If she will lay I think I will try that.
The shed we use for raising Turkeys and meat chickens. Luckily it is empty for the coldest part of the year. In the summer they free range. So yes lots of room but a big bother to catch and move them.

I lost a Birchen hen tonight. I had to find out why. She had a impacted crop. It was full of straw. While I was at it I checked for worms and she was worm free. I don't know why she would eat straw. Anyone else have this problem? I don't know what else to use for nesting material. This was chopped straw that I bought at the feed store. Maybe a bail of straw would be better.
That is strange... too bad. My chickens love to lay in the straw. When I put shavings in their favorite nesting box they stopped using it and moved to another that still had straw but I have never noticed them eating it.

When you say the cockrell will be hard to produce ? Will that take more generations?

It was definitely 100% impacted. With straw and feed. Not water but solid and hard. Nothing getting to the intestines. They where empty and she was thin. Poor girl.

Remember Mud, one of my cockerels in the past with recurrent impacted crop? He ate mud and all kinds of inedible things, and never was able to thrive. Chickens can be fairly stupid and eat things that they shouldn't. That is the only explanation I can offer. I am very sorry for your loss. :(
