International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Chickengr your friend BCM are a mixture of good and bad. There is a few nice hens there.
This is a reason I don t like pen breeding
He should choose the best 3 hens and get ready of the rest

my friend was not pen breeding, it was male+female=chicks. there are 2 young pullets that might be good. when the time comes I will ask you which hens to keep

RedBank to breed the comb is easier you need a hen with a great comb
The hardest thing is the Red shoulder of the BCM because is the Autossomal Red more complex to fix. We can t see it on the hen. That problem

RedBank and Kfeltoon you both have a good bass to recreate the GCM from the current stock you both have. It is easier and will work well with a BCM. Don t worst your times with this solid Cuckoo.

I have all your advice about breeding GCM using regular cuckoos and BCM jotted down and saved from our conversation on the white and cuckoo marans thread. Guess my husband will have to build me a few more pens. :D

See.... this is why we can't do combs till Chooks man is up and running again.  We need to start with a different part of the SOP.

Yeah thats true. So how are we doing it? You post the pics, name the part to be reviewed and then we give it a go?
Bare with me if I am slow to respond. My work and school week is hectic these days.

@Chooks man

I was on the MCCUSA facebook and someone said their hen laid 5 dark eggs and then went light. You told me that you observe 30 eggs to determine whether or not they measure up. What are we looking for? 4+? If they never lay dark enough regardless of looks they are a cull?

This sounds good to me. If anybody else wants us to discuss some part of the SOP.... jump right in here! I will work on something today.

From the marans sites the averaging out of 30 eggs is done to determine that a hen is laying a minimum of 4 on the color scale.

I would say a medium color on the eggs scale (5-7) would promote well colored eggs in the offspring and good layers.

I think he might be beautiful and we will have to trade BCM for CM eggs!

The French SOP does not count points. The American SOP states five. So if you are concerned with the latter, keep in mind if he does have 6 it only detracts a point or two. But this is exactly why I want to go over combs. I don't understand them at all.

The Coq below is pictured on the MCCUSA , the page on their site with the BCM SOP. Does he have 6 to you?
