International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Problem is she is BLC and carries white. I think all 4 cockerels have white under fluff. I forgot to check no band. Well for sure 3 do. Black Jack has the least I think.

ok nice to know . so we go forward breeding no back crossing .because we don t want to reinforce the parasitic white .
we need to breed BC to BC to restore a pure black plumage and fluff .

Chooksman, my three oldest BC pullets are either from Blaze and Ruby or Blaze and Jade. It was before I kept track but know it was one of the two hens.

these 3 older BC pullets will be mated to White band or no band . half sibling mating , inbred to Blaze .
ho is the mother/s of Blaze and Ace ? we need pullet for them .

Blazes mother is unknown. Shame he was so mean. Nimbus mother was believed to be Pearl. Remember blaze was a little smaller so we believed they didn't both come from Pearl.
Ace and Black Jack's mother was Ruby or Jade.

I am looking at records. I think 2 BC & 1 Blcm pullet from Jasper and Storm. One BLC from Jasper X Pearl. Might be more but will have to check bands and figure it out. Not sure on blaze and Pearl. I will find out!

There are some really attractive Marans you guys are breeding. I'm so happy that Rick gets to see another day!!! I was rooting for him!! I especially have a soft spot for those white and black marans...just gorgeous! Are they called Silver marans?

@Chooks man we missed you!!! Glad you are back with time enough to post on here.

I am excited to say that I have breeding pens!! My big open "rooster pen" was divided on the weekend into 4 pens. They all have roosts, and can be expanded with little chicken doors so I can give more space to the birds when the other pens aren't in use.
I've also got power out there now so I can add light for my hens and heated waterers etc.. The roosters that are out there are a bit confused why their house has been turned into condos.

One of my marans pullets (the blue one) is broody. She is 23 weeks old. I haven't had a pullet go broody before? Any of you?
Also- one of my marans pullets is laying a huge egg suddenly- 70-80 grams. The one I cracked this morning had something weird --- the yolk had a membrane around it. So when I cracked it, and it fell into the bowl, the yolk appeared white. So I scooped out the yolk and had to rip the membrane, and out came the yolk.! Anyone ever had this before?
Yes the black and white marans are called 'black silver' or 'birchen'
There was a hullabaloo a few years ago when they were introducing the color to the APA because birchen as a color includes lacing one third down the breast but the marans version is basically supposed to be like the black copper pattern except white based instead of red based, so I guess it's now supposed to be black silver......

I guess....

Anyways, I have lots and lots of cockerels if you happen to drive through Montana.... I have to butcher around 40-50 of them. I get to keep 10! Yay!

this poor hen is having a terrible molt this year.... We get snow in 3 days so I'm wondering if I should find her a sweater!
