International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Yes the black and white marans are called 'black silver' or 'birchen'
There was a hullabaloo a few years ago when they were introducing the color to the APA because birchen as a color includes lacing one third down the breast but the marans version is basically supposed to be like the black copper pattern except white based instead of red based, so I guess it's now supposed to be black silver......

I guess....

Anyways, I have lots and lots of cockerels if you happen to drive through Montana.... I have to butcher around 40-50 of them. I get to keep 10! Yay!

In the US, Black Silvers have a solid black breast and Silver Birchens have lacing on their breast. Basically the same bird except for the silver lacing.

Just culled those 2 cockerels from line #1.

As i was checking the wing bands, i found that i was mistaken on who was who.

Negan is the one we are keeping NOT RICK.

So it was Negan all along with the nice short tail and nice mass. He had the worst hatch down as a chick. That and he has vulture hocks.

Lets see what he throws when bred to line #2 hens. There will be a lot of culling but i hope a few nice marans too.

I knew we where keeping Negan . I had him marked in my note bock .
don t to worry about more then one thing in time . don t forget the order of breeding marans chooks .
body type
egg color
body pattern
last one to breed is a refinement to all the post .like comb ,feather on they feet ,hatch down etc...........................

it is not the way they look that mater when breeding chooks or other animals ,it what they produce is more important . we are selecting breeders not show bird . totally different method.

we need to find a compatible pair .a pair that fix each other faults and compliment each other strength .

Birchen is a name of the ER family group . this family group need to have colored hackle ,back ,shoulder and lacing on they hole chest . there is 2 varieties copper and silver .
copper variety has many names .like Black copper { true french name Noir cuivree mean Black copper } , copper black ,black chest red etc.......
silver variety is known as silver black { in french Noire Argentee .mean Silver Black} or black chest silver or the grey , silver etc.......

Ah Marans breeders long time ago decided to breed Black copper marans with minimum copper on they chest .random marking . that the SOP we have now .

I don t know who called the Silver Black Birchen . true name is Silver Black
making 2 standard does not make ant sense , just confusing .
