International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

yea its pretty in the south this time of year. the rest of time not so much. here in South ms it's a sauna 9-10 months out. chooks man congratulations on the start of hatching I wish you well. I finally know the feeling of hatching your own eggs.
now talk can laugh if yall want, I don't mind. but that there is my very first egg I've ever hatched. it hatched 2 hours ago and I'm pumped up about it. it's just a RIR, I been practicing with eggs out of my layers flock.

congrats! I have RIR crosses (red sex link) pullets, great layers. I guess you will hatch marans next time.

thank you, I hope to hatch some marans, just as soon as I can find some eggs. what I been hatching is RIR and I run those with some barred rock hens so I'm getting black sex link also. I been having a hard time finding marans eggs so I just want to be good and confident when/ if that ever happens.

There are many Marans breeders here and quite a few in the near by states, it would be ideal to start with something of quality to streamline the process of creating a stable bloodline.

I know of a guy who is located around the coast who is quite a good breeder and has excellent bloodline, I can PM you a link to his Facebook page if you'd like.

You're always welcome to some of my chicks/eggs if you're up for the trip... though I will admit there is much work to be done with mine.

The temporary brooding setup.

My favorite is this nearly black one. I had to hold it up so you could see it's face better.

There was one super penguiny one in this hatch, it is super brave... probably a cockerel hahaha.

Hey All,

Thought I would share a pic of the first eggs I got this week from my Marans Pullets (hatched April 30th). Ellie, my BCM, laid the two on the left and Thelma Lou, my BlueCM, laid the one on the right. Ellie's second egg (top left) was a bit darker and more even than her first. I'm still waiting for Charlene, my Copper Splash, to lay. I'll track the first 30 eggs from each pullet for weigh, color and shape. I don't have a color chart but I'm guessing about 5, maybe 6, on the Marans Scale.

Goodnight All,
Keith

Bloodlines of the dad is Greenfire rooster over Beverly Davis/ Wade Jean hens.
The 3 hens in the above I was told are part Bev Davis as well, not sure.
Tomorrow I will be sure to get a picture of the group.
