International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well done Braxton! I hope you get some good birds to work with.

Keith

Thank you! I got quite a few that look good. I am more or less tinkering at the moment, not doing anything serious until spring.

Hey All,

Thought I would share a pic of the first eggs I got this week from my Marans Pullets (hatched April 30th). Ellie, my BCM, laid the two on the left and Thelma Lou, my BlueCM, laid the one on the right. Ellie's second egg (top left) was a bit darker and more even than her first. I'm still waiting for Charlene, my Copper Splash, to lay. I'll track the first 30 eggs from each pullet for weigh, color and shape. I don't have a color chart but I'm guessing about 5, maybe 6, on the Marans Scale.

Goodnight All,
Keith

They look good, your girls will probably lay even darker than that if I had to guess.

I don't have a chart too. what number do you think these are:

and without flash:

they look like in the photo without flash, the first one (left) looks even darker. I will take photos of the other eggs as well and post them.

The temporary brooding setup.

My favorite is this nearly black one. I had to hold it up so you could see it's face better.

There was one super penguiny one in this hatch, it is super brave... probably a cockerel hahaha.

they are cute , how many you have ,1 is dark face .1 is penguiny and ?

penguiny one with a lighter feet and beak is a cockerel for sure .( I suspect him too be very colorful or over colored _ less melanin _ maybe carrying some white feathers ) Speculative thought

you have the extreme . dark one and penguin one .follow they development and you will learn a lot .
take note how they feather up ,how much color they have and when they start showing it up ,etc....................

all the best

nice color and shape for the 2 top one.

I prefer the egg from the blue hen ,great shape OVAL ( true marans egg ) with a million tiny dark dot . absolutely sublime Breed a lot chicks from her .

the black copper hen second egg is great too but she will lose is she compete with a blue .

well happy for you .you didn t wait in vain .
