International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you, I realy hoped I can use the golden cuckoo to make something interesting.
But first, your avatar pic, Her colors are warm and brownish and the hackles look like silver,
She is Gorgeous!!! what is she? A golden in an amazing light?

Regarding the single and double barred, is it noticeable in the feathers? How can I tell what is he?
And if he is a double barred and I'll use the golden cuckoo cockerel over a black copper hen will the chicks be pure golden cuckoo?
And if he is a single barred? 50% are pure golden cuckoo? and the rest will be?

Thanks a lot

for me to know if he is a single or double barred .I need to see a photo of him .

a Golden cuckoo marans is a barred Black copper . so they work very well together in the breeding pen.
double barred will throw 100% golden cuckoo
Single barred will throw 50% golden cuckoo and 50% black copper maran ( if mated to a Black copper hen).

the golden cuckoo coming out of this cross ( Golden cuckoo X black copper ) will be pure .

here a photos of the double barred and a single barred marans Roosters ( cuckoo marans)

Charlie2 = Double barred Silver cuckoo marans. he body color is lighter .

here a single barred

Shamrock . you can see his body color is darker compare to Charlie2.

A single barred cockerel will have darker black barring, and a double barred cockerel will be lighter with more white in between the barring. Yes you can definitely tell a difference. If you mated your golden cuckoo cockerel to black copper marans hens, the offspring would all be single barred (but only if the cockerel is pure golden cuckoo and double barred.) But no the offspring would not be pure golden cuckoo. In order to create pure golden cuckoos you can do that one of two ways. Method #1: Breed golden cuckoo cockerel to black copper hen = F1 single barred males and females. Then breed the single barred F1 pullets back to their sire. This is called back crossing (cross daughters back to their father). The offspring of the back cross would be pure golden cuckoo (double barred cockerels, and single barred pullets). Method #2: Breed golden cuckoo cockerel to black copper hen = F1 single barred males and females. Mate best two F1 single barred siblings together (single barred male x single barred female) = F2, double barred males, and single barred females (pure golden cuckoos). From there you can either breed the F2 offspring (male x female) together to produce F3 or back cross the F2 pullets back to the original golden cuckoo cock bird, if you like his qualities. Keep good breeding records and mark each generation (toe punch, wing band, leg band) so you can identify them. :)

I think Mud is just young and inexperienced. He won't even tidbit to call the pullets to offer them food. He grabs the food and runs so he can selfishly gobble it down like a big jerk. lol. But he's definitely starting to act more macho. And he is finally crowing as of just the other day (or that's the first time I've heard him anyway). Hopefully he will learn to be a gentleman. I have a few more eggs in the incubator from their pen I haven't candled and more I'm saving up to set this weekend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed he has fertilized them.

Ah I'm so jealous of all your Marans chicks. I have 3 LA eggs in lockdown now, only 2 looked good. One looked like a late quitter when I candled prior to lockdown. The rest of my Marans eggs in that bunch were clears. I'm hoping I have a Marans chick or two to post pics of soon. They are due tomorrow.
