I love every thing in this photo .the cockerel type
his rich red copper
his log flat back
his tail short and thin at the top
well marked shoulders
black plumage is pure black
well colored feet and well feathered
straight legs
lovely head

only his comb need a little tidy up .the points are not harmonious

great photo .every thing is stylish

what is not clear to me how this cockerel will produce Ck1 with a straw colored hackle
what sort of hen he was paired with
CK1 his body color is wrong gold in his hackle and lighter under fluff .
love to see the Dam of Ck1
Pul 1 2 and 3 are too black but nice body type .1 and 2 are the best ( looking from the photos) hard to tell some time .
I ll mate them to they Sire Ck 1 to breed true the body type and reinforce the dark egg color gene . if they turn up too black don t panic . fix one thing at the time .
now you have BCM chooks with great body type and you are saying the Ck1 his Dam lay dark egg .
body type and dark egg are the first to be fixed and bred true . body color come after

My family thinks the straw in Ck1 is 'pretty.'

As I mentioned, Ck2 had some frostbite. His comb had a twist in the front and in the back. I'll see if I can dig up a before picture.

Here's Ck1 's dam. She has zero saddle feathering (from the roos  ) and is starting to moult neck feathers right now, so you'll have to use your imagination. She's the second biggest hen, and I watched her lay eggs for a whole week, so I know her egg color is the best.

that 1 white feather can be due to some health issue as well. it seems that your cockerel does not have it. don't discard him too early. he is nice and if you find him a good match you will get nice chicks.
chickengr, thank you! I will defiantly hold on to him and watch him grow. I do not see any white on him at this point, but he may develop some. He is a super friendly boy. He's fun to watch. I just wish his tail was not so uglyl:barnie. :)

Antonio and 9 hens is good .I think you left your self short on roosters .let see how this little one will do .

let them molt and rest .

Marans chooks are not a heavy layers so they don t need the layer feed because is formulated for the layer .high calcium and low is vitamin s need to help the embryo to form .
Breeder feed is formulated to meet the need of the hen and the embryo .

You are right. I took a terrible chance keeping only one rooster..... I know. I hope this chick will give me some backup. Keep your fingers crossed. I have not lost any chickens since I got my dog.... but that just covers varmints.

you welcome .

I m here to help

If it wasn't for Chooks man and this thread I would still be trying to figure things out. I would still be culling/rehoming my BCM over every flaw. This thread taught me to work with what I have, how to change direction and given a choice, how to make the right choice. I am so thankful for everyone on this list. My advice if you are new to the thread and you have the time, read the thread from the beginning. The information here is amazing. Special thanks to all that keep contributing and treating every question with respect.

Thank you to everyone who helped me, let's say I did want to breed....should i get new birds or could I eventually get all the faults out?

read this thread from the beginning and learn how to fix things. 2 perfect chickens don't give you perfect chicks. you can add a few better chicks to your little flock and work hard.

I also didn't want to breed but I am getting hooked, lol.
