International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

first let them do some growing .than post photos of them so we can help you select the good one .

I never rush to cull any chooks .I give them the time they need to fully express them selves ,specially if I have a little number of chicks from a any line.

we can always use the chooks we have to improve them if we want to put some time .

TO MUCH CULLING WILL KEEP YOUR CHOOKS WARD EMPTY .

chooks man
Thank you so look much I really value you thoughts.
Thanks

both cockerel are yellow .they still carry the Autossomal Red . genetically speaking they are Ar/ar+ not Ar/Ar.
they body type and marking are great .
Cockerel 1 seem more wider @ the shoulders .

both of them if mated a a well colored Birchen hens with a pure silver hackle .half of they progeny will be pure silver

PS = nice turkey flock you have there .
Was thinking similarly. I suppose I should keep them both. One is definitely more yellow than his brother, but the yellower guy has no gold leakage that I can see yet, and his eyes are a clearer orange. Slightly less yellow guy is pretty dark overall, and the bottom half of his eye is dark and not orange. I also noticed yellower guy has colored ear Tufts, not solid black ones, so should make better colored daughters?
I'll have to post how Handsome is doing. He has yet to grow back his tail, but he's so nice looking. He, also, has some yellowing on the wings, but no gold leakage as of yet. There is one blue Cockerel with definite gold leakage across the wing bow, so I'll probably eat him.

How much time is that?

Hi very good question . how much time is that ?

Depend on many factor and breeding goals .
let say if I m breeding for eyes color and shanks colors than the culling will start @ day one .
if I m breeding for body type ,than I start selecting @ the age of 12 weeks old tell 10 months old .
if I m breeding for body color ,than I start selecting around 5 months old tell 10 months old.
Breeding for no parasitic white I wait tell the final adult molt 18/20 month old

breeding for comb I start selecting as the comb start to form .

there not just one formula to be applied for all the traits we want to select for .
number of chicks will influence the timing for selection too . if I have many chicks from one line than I start culling early too . if the number is lower than I wait as long as I can .

CULLING EVERY THING AND STARTING ALL OVER IS NOT MY STYLE .

he is good .
great on body type and body color .
with him you only have to worry about his comb ,nothing else .

he is young and a big type ,give him a time to mature .
those type of cockerel will take to 10 month to fully express they big body type

love him and love the chunky pullet next to him

he do have a bad comb BUT
he has a best wattle too .small round and free from any split or folding .VERY VERY VERY hard to breed true .
those days we see a lot marans rooster champion with they wattles almost touching the ground .

he is a asset to you I see a lot great progeny coming out of him .keep him safe

Chooks man

Thanks Chooksman! I am so glad to hear you think he will throw nice offspring. That is a huge relief. I was worrying the rest of my cockerels were going to be a complete bust. He was an ugly duckling as a youngster, but he is definitely looking better as he matures. :)

Hello everyone,

I wasn't going to come on here and whine about my situation but so much good info and knowledge here I would be remiss not asking for advice. Hurricane Irma is headed for my house. I have open coops. I am debating turning the chickens out tomorrow morning (Irma comes in the morning) and letting them flee to the woods. If I tarp or put plywood on the coop it will become a flying object. So my friends..... what do I do?
I hope all is well ReBanks!!!
