International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

LadyRed, did you say that your cockerel was from a hatchery? I couldn' t remember. Most of the time hatcheries breed their birds for high yield egg production, and don't really focus on body type ect. In this way the breeds tend to loose some of their integrity. Sometimes they even cross different breeds together. I know I was tempted to buy some silver cuckoo marans once, but I have heard tell they cross them with barred rocks to help increase egg production. I am not saying hatchery birds are bad, but they are not always carefully selected to improve on the breed. Like I said, your cockerel may not be from a hatchery, and I am not slamming hatchery birds. He is very pretty. I think his hackle color is really cool looking, just wouldn' t meet the SOP.
He is from a Hatchery.
I figured they must cross breed. Not many from this Hatchery come out breed standard.

Believe it or not I hadn't paid much attention to my only remaining FRF cockerel lately since my favorite went missing, but he isn't looking half bad. I've been so busy with work and school I've barely had time to look up. After I had mentioned him to Redbanks it crossed my mind to look for him when I got home.

He finally shed the long twisted tail feathers he had and his big boy feathers are coming in. His copper seems to have darkened up some and isnt so straw colored. He may be a decent looking cockerel after all. But he does have darker eyes. If I didnt know better I would swear he isnt the same rooster! My pure FRF birds are all double leg banded so I can identify them easier, and sure enough its him. He was much uglier a few weeks ago!

why in earth you thought he is not a good cockerel .
I like him a lot .a little goofy but that ok still young .
he is going well colored and be able to pass that to his females progeny 100%
love his spotted chest and clear copper ears tuft .the shoulder color is coming along .
all his Autossomal coloring are there plus the sex linked colors as well . that is his best asset .
his weakest point are his comb ,the first 3 point are joint together . not well define like the other 3 . the back of his comb is actually good .well lifted .
his eyes are brown ( marble the French call them ) , give him more time

every thing else is good to me from head to toes .
we need to wait and see his tail when is fully feathered

keep him safe . build a small pen specifically for him . don t let the hawk take him from you please .
we can t afford to loose our future breeding stock to this vermin .

his beak is well colored
nice head . pretty
love his ears tuft
well colored hackle .maybe a little lighter ,but let see when he is fully feathered .

I swear a few weeks ago this cockerel was an eye sore. Lol! He was scraggly and pitiful, and pretty ugly. He has really surprised me and I am thrilled he is looking better! His mother is my darkest layer, however she is not the prettiest hen if you remember.

I will definitely protect him and keep him safe. Thank you for all your guidance! :D

Hi Cricketfarm ;
what are you trying to say . you hatched 50 chicks they parents are BCM X blue copper OR Black X black?

Black X Black = 100% Black
Black X Blue = 50 % each.
Splash X Black = 100 % Blue

hope that help.

I can not answer your question if the Blue are more rare than the black one .here in Aistralia yeah they are rare and more expensive than the BCM.

Hi Chooks man,,

May I ask you if I mated splash*splash=?
Birchen*black=?
White*splash?
What's the color of there eggs and chickens?

Or any one can help pleas let me know, because I have these marans colors.

I prefer the ugly hens with the ability to lay dark eggs in my pen ,rather than the pretty one with light egg .

definitely the cockerel is going over his Dam for sure .he has a perfect body color ( what we need from the Roo) and she lay dark egg ( what we need from the hen)
the prettiness has to come from some where else in the future .
you have a chance to breed your own line of colorful BCM with dark egg ability .
breed the prettiness separately from different line ,than joint them in the future ,to create your own correct line .

all the best

Welcome Khaled .
Marans in Kuwait . great

post some photos of your marans please . I love to see them and help you out to breed them correctly .
Splash X splash = 100% splash
Birchen ( silver Black) x Black ( pure black not a BCM without hackle marking) .this question is a little complex . we are going to deal with a Sex linked and Autossomal body coloring . not simple .
1) pure Black ,( Extended black) , silver based E/E , S/S Roo or E/E . S/- hen X Birchen ( silver Black ) = F1all Black progeny carrying a Birchen pattern .( split Birchen)
when those F1 Black chooks are mated between them selves = they produce an F2 progeny . 25% pure Black . 25% pure Bichen and 50 % black Split Birchen.

2) Black ( extended Black ) Golden based E/E s+/s+ X Birchen ( Silver Black) = F1 progeny all black progeny carrying the Golden and silver pattern .
when those F1 are mated together = they produce an f2 , this population will be 12.5% pure black silver based S/S .
12.5% black golden based s+/s+
25% Black silver based and 25% Black golden based
12.5% pure Black copper
6.25% pure Birchen pullets and 6,25% impure birchen cockerels S/s+

if the black are not true black E/E , bred from the BCM population without hackle marking .than the result will be completely different .

I ll post the rest of the answer in separate post because the White x a Splash is the most complex thing in genetic .too many factor involved
