International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I'm thinking of joining a Marans Club anyone have any ideas on a good one. I'm interested in the possibility of showing some hens or a rooster or both in the near future a long with eggs. I don't have any good ones at this time but I hope to in the spring. Thanks for the help.

Hi RedBank , you are now in contact with a source . pure marans .

one day you will have those gorgeous eggs from France ,matter of time ,the things will change .

I m pleased you found your way. to a true marans place. learn a little french or master the translator and you are in business

good luck

hi every one how we doing .
too much rain all the work stopped on the new farm. I ll get there one day or another .

the comb has to be managed in both sexes Hen and Cock.

for me because I don t show .the comb is the last thing in my selection.

here the order of selection I fellow ;

1) dark egg.
2) type.
3) mass
4) head ,eyes. comb
5) hackle and body color ( variety color pattern )
6) feet, feathers and color .
7) over all health and resistance to disease .
8) uniformity
9) keeping them dual purpose .mean 180 large eggs per year per hen and a heavy weight plus testy meat ( marans flesh is classified Haute Game . cream de la cream .with la Breese and la Flech both French breeds )

like this I know what I m doing and where I m at in my breeding program .

I just don t cull the chook because is faulty . I only cull when I don t see a way to correct the fault or I have a better subject .

sorry you cannot work on the new farm. if only you could send half of rain here so we both would be ok.

my marans come from a sort of commercial breeding place (roos+hens+incubator/broody, no selection, locked in the coop). they don't have good health although they are very tough birds compared to the other breeds.

my pullet is 4 months old. she has greenish orange-ish eyes but light, not dark. is she ok with that or there is still time for colour to change? I cannot post any pics at the moment, my phone cannot connect to the computer. as I have just bought a scooter I am not even thinking of buying a new phone, so I will be saying things for a while.

Good Day Chooks Man,

Sorry you can't work on your new place. We are getting some rain but need it to cool things off.

I have been looking at pictures on Marans Aspirans. Thank you for helping me get on the thread.

You would be proud of me today. I sold 9 Bielefelders. I am keeping to my plan and preparing my operation for Marans.

I do think once I get the BCM settled I want to do Birchen... but that is down the road.

it seems I will not need to get rid of my hens. a lot of them will die till I get marans. I have just lost another hen, lakenvelder. I will keep a laying flock of different breeds especially the ones that get broody, I will need them. I want to raise chickens with the broodies whenever possible.

if miracle happens and I sell a house (trying for a few years) I might buy a better place for raising chickens. where I live now I cannot have more than 50 chickens and there is no much space. I already need 2 level coops, they have their bedrooms on the first floor, lol. the coops must be elevated from the ground so they use the space underneath as a shelter.

I am looking around on the Marans Aspiran. It is difficult to navigate for me compared to BYC. Much easier here but I am looking at pictures.

I saw the most beautiful Rooster I have ever seen it belonged to Laurent. The copper was so perfect.

I also find it difficult to navigate in the marans aspiran. I wish I spoke french.

I need to see more pics to decide which one in my favourite.

Hi RedBank the rooster you are talking about in marans aspiran is faultless his name is Bello ( I name him ) he is stunning ,
did you see the pullets he end up throwing gorgeous all with great type and beautiful coppery hackle. problem he has yield a good son . mostly over colored on the chest ( I think Laurent would not wait for them to mature and molt, that all) very early selection . luck of space .

chickengr I like the way you thinking .Broody hen s to rise your marans chooks ,great way to do t. less work and better result .smart chooks they will know how to roost .

Marans Aspiran will take you time to get used to t . good for photos and be in contact with the source.

here the name of the varieties in French .

NCC = BCopper
NCA = Birchen
BLCC = Blue copper
CCA = Silver cuckoo.
CCD = Golden cuckoo.
Blanche = White.
FRQN = BTBuff.
Noir = Black
FRD = Wheaten.

hope that will help you navigate through easily .

I just sent Nao a message. I love looking at the pictures. I saw the Bello son pic. Isn't it funny...... I would love to have that boy and he has been culled. Just how much copper on the chest is okay?

can you write full words in french? that will help me to memorize it.

we have hell of heat today. I have a fever, no wonder poor chickens get sick and die in summer. but even as bad as I feel I am going to chop them some veggies from the fridge.

Hi RedBank

I do not keep a BCM cockerel with a pure Black chest.

I always keep the one with a colored chest when they are young.

how much copper ? depend .they molt and they change. each subject is different .

with what is going on with a black ( over colored ) BCM I prefer to go with the extra color .it s better . NO good for the show but excellent in the breeding pen with the black hen s.
