The way I understand it is that the splash coloring covers up and hides the true colors underneath. With the pullets all you have to do is make sure they have good type, leg feathering, etc and mate them to a nice black copper cockerel as the male is most important in putting proper coloring on the chicks. With splash copper cockerels you have no way of telling really what colors he has "under" the splash. He could be badly overmelanized or badly overcolored, there is no way of knowing what kind of chicks he will throw. In using a nice black copper cockerel you can better control the offspring with good results. All splash cockerels are culls. Mating a black copper cockerel to splash pullets will yield 100% blue copper offspring. I will experiment with this in the spring and will post my results. Hoping for some nice chicks.
