International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Quote: Thank you Chooks Man. I was hoping you would weigh in on the pictures. None of these hens are Gabby. We have warm weather coming in a couple of days. I will post pics of all girls one at a time and tagged. The new roosters have been fighting with each other since they got here. They never fought at Amanda's. These two new roosters have the same problems as mine. Tails and combs but they are very nice.

They have new hens to fight over in new territory. That's the main reason boys fight. lol. You will have to pen them separately with their own group of hens to avoid serious injuries to either of those precious roosters. Glad you finally got them home! YAY!!

I m happy for you .

Please keep them as far as you can from your flock in they separate cages or run . tell you are sure they are healthy and fit .

don t play with a fire .I did and I got burned . lost 10 breeding hen and 4 rooster ,because I wanted that Black copper roosters.

introduce them to your flock after you breed from your roosters first .genetically specking they are superior than they sire .and fitter too .

keep the older rooster for later in the season to breed from .

personnel advice as friend .

Chooks man is right on the quarantine thing. I've been burned also. I purchased some chicks from a breeder and put them in a brooder, thinking no big deal.. they're just chicks. Those chicks were exposed to some of our chicks we were brooding at the time and slowly but surely our chicks starting becoming ill. Our chicks were never exposed to illness, had never been outside.. period. The illness was brought into the brooder by the chicks we purchased and as a result, we culled every chick we purchased, and each and every one of our chicks that were exposed. I didn't want to risk the illness spreading to other birds.

Quarantine for a minimum of 30 days to ensure the roosters aren't carring illness. You can pen a "canary" chicken with each of them, ones you don't care to lose. The "canary" will start showing illness if the quarantined birds are carrying a disease. A chicken can be carrying a disease and be asymptomatic.

Live and learn.

How long do you guys wait for hens to be "cleaned out" after moving hens to a different rooster? I know hens can retain a rooster's sperm for some time, but how long exactly?

we have 2-3 cm/1 inch snow

I can't wait for my chickens to get out and see how they react. the very first snow for them.

Very happy right now. Set some BCM with possible Blue Copper and splash eggs saturday along with CCL and eggs from my Seramas. They're shipped from the breeder [other than Serama] so who knows what kind of hatch I'll have. I did lose power Monday twice for about an hour each. Incubator is sitting in unheated garage and they got down to 53F before the power came back on. Hoping it didnt kill them all. I'm remaining positive about it tho so fingers crossed. Will candle this coming Saturday and see.

Quote: I was terrified of this to begin with. I don't let "unknown" chicken people come to my house. I also had a rule that I would never get any adult chickens. I once gave a rooster away, then decided I wanted him back. He was only gone a few days. When he came back the whole flock got Avian Pox. Could have been a coincidence..... I do have wild turkeys around. The only good thing was it was Avian Pox and not something worse. No casualties and a flock immune to AP. The roosters are no longer fighting. Claude and the Ameraucana are fighting I guess with all this competition but they are just making sure everything is still status quo. And then there is Antonio - taking care of his hens and a long way off. He is not involved in any of this. People have no idea how complicated chickens are. You would think they would be the easiest creature in the world to raise.

Quote: Poor canary chicken! If I put a canary hen in the pen it would not be a disease that kills her...... it will be those to giant roosters that have been penned up for a month by themselves. LOL I always thought chicks were safe!
