International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I like that we discuss all varieties of Marans here. There is so much we need to learn and be exposed to. We have great contributors that provide reliable information. We have Marans people that are not all egg cartons and no Marans. A little take on my "All hat and no cattle." Knowing this kind of information helps us even if we never use it because it gives us a greater understanding of the complicated business of genetics.

all the marans varieties are related to one each other in some how . just people don t know much about them and how to work with them as marans flock not as a single variety .

a lot for us to learn. marans breed have a lot to offer . if we practice and do thing not waiting for some one to breed a good chooks and sale them to us than we are going to have gorgeous marans in the future ant variety we want .

I m going to have all the marans varieties never herd of ,never been created . I have all the genes and the knowledge to make it happen
this my marans breeding journey I m sharing with you .

Marans breed faced and still facing a lot Bureaucracy in they home country . a lot neglect and a lot lot lot politic . Bravo to some few great breeders, they kept the breed going . Monique is one of them

Hi Chickengr can we talk about the Birchen project here .because a lot people will learn how it work . the French are not interested in any crossing or making a new variety .

here what you need to do .

First year .
Mate jupiter to you BCM hen and make the F!

need a photos of him now ,how he look . I need to evaluate him first .

chooks man
here is an old photo of jupiter where you can see some leakage:

I will take a photo tomorrow as he is sleeping now. he has 1 naked neck girlfriend so he has already been in my project. I think you should get naked necks before I create marneck, lol.

what about egg genetics, how many years of crossing to get marans colour? and is it possible to get true olive eggers (not only to cross a blue egger with dark brown egger)?

I have a brakel pullet with jupiter. she lays white eggs. would their offspring lay pink eggs? I am after pink eggers too. I will always keep a laying flock for a colourful basket.

ahh after YEARS of raising bcms, I (might, maybe, possibly, slight chance but don't jinx it) be getting this dark egg thing!

Very nice!!!!!

we had 10 days of rain .so every thing is green again .they are loving the tender grass shoot .

there is some great one .well pleased

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and photographs of your beautiful birds!!! It is very inspiring to rookies like me

you welcome .

Sharing is quality . if we don t do it we become selfish .no good trait.

marans chooks breed is very rich on colors .a lot varieties within a breed . making them easy to work with rather having all sort of chooks breeds , very hard to work with and organize .

one breed and all the varieties possible .most of them are cousin to each other ,mean they work well together in the breeding pen. like
Birchen and Silver cuckoo .
Black copper and Blue copper
Black copper and Golden cuckoo

I m great full and lucky to have so many marans to work with .

I ll wait for a the new photo. nice one please .

Ah you are going to beat me in creating the Marneck. I ll be very happy to help you creating it . guess first come ,first serve .will be very interesting project .especially for the egg basket .

the true egg color will show up in the second generation F2 ( true one coming out F1 cross between them selves ) we will see in the F2 progeny a lot different colors ,from pure white to dark brown ,Pink too

yeah it is possible to get any egg color to breed true .

I ll explain it to you soon when I have time how you do it step by step how to breed a great Marneck with a lot eggs colors variation .

how many chicks you managed to hatch ?

do no worry about a little white on the face as long as the body has less white .

it is going to take you quite some time to breed pure BCM with a proper hatch down . this trait has been neglected for a long long long time .I only know one marans breeder in France who start to take care of this problem

people are more interested in showing the chooks not properly breed them ,that why they energy is going .
show chooks only need to looki good before the second molt ( the best time to show them before the parasitic white take over ) does not mean they are pure( they can be F1/F2) or well bred free from any fault even the 95 point French chooks most of them are not that great year after the show.

we need to add depth to ours breeding program ,so the chooks will be stable line NOT from outward crossing .

for now take your time .hatch as many as you can . take note ,tag them .let grow and select the best one and get ready of the others .

I have at least 25-30 Marans chicks now, with more in lockdown in the hatcher and even more in the cabinet incubator. Its a lot of Marans chicks for me considering its the most Marans chicks I've ever had at one given time. Looks like we will be eating a lot of chicken.
