International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@kfelton0002 How are your Red Banks chicks doing? @Chooks man Tony 2 is so nice I am starting to worry something might happen to him. I can't believe how nice he is. His hackle is dark copper with no halo. Pictures soon. Not bragging just pretty amazed!

They are doing well. Growing fast and very healthy. They are pretty much fully feathered now, and it looks like your original assessment was correct: 1 cockerel and 3 pullets. I am very happy with them. They are very chunky and vigorous chicks and get along quite well in the big brooder with the older chicks. I haven't posted pictures yet because they are still in their awkward phase and are all mostly solid black. I will take pics when I turn them out to free range. No worries about the free ranging. We have been keeping Waylon tethered on a collar and long lead while we are feeding and such and have to turn our backs. This gives him controlled exposure to the chooks while keeping him from chasing and killing them. He is now 12 weeks old and growing big. With the controlled exposure on the long lead, and correction via his e-collar while we are supervising his off lead time with the chooks he will learn not to kill the chickens.

I am very happy to hear your Tony 2 is growing into a nice bird. Keep him safe! :)

Wow! Great color in that group. I have a few legbars, an olive egger and a few welsummers that should start laying any day now. Those Marans eggs are gorgeous!

Thank you! I am very happy with my chooks. I love the range of egg colors. My Marans girls may all be the same breed but each bird lays an egg that is unique to her. Some eggs have a lovely satin-like sheen, some a more matte finish, some are solid and some speckled. Collecting eggs is never boring. :)

Post pics when your girls start laying! I am so looking forward to my Olive Eggers to reach point of lay. Hoping for nice color from them.

I think they told me Black Copper Marans is all they breed. Some of them look as if they don't have feathered feet at all though. They will be 4 weeks on Thursday.
Here are 2 of them without feathered feet when they were about a week old, they all hatched Thanksgiving except one that I had to save out of its shell.

They are cuties! Congratulations on your hatch!

If he is a nice Rooster and want to breed to him you may want to give him time. I cant see how it is genetic. If not make a gravy. lol

He inherited his mother's S shaped comb and he has marbled eyes, which are two strikes against him already aside from the bump. I am really going to try my best to choose males with nice eye color if I have a choice. I have nicer cockerels out there so far that I prefer to the cockerel with the bump. I can't keep umpteen cockerels around after they are mature so the cockerels that have numerous faults will be bound for freezer camp. I will give them all plenty long enough to grow out so I can tell if they are going to be worth keeping. For now we will call him Dumplings. ;)
