International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Just because there is hostility on the Marans FB pages and clubs doesn't mean there is hostility here. I think we do well to not bring that here. We are all amongst friends in this group. :)

I do agree that if a line was imported from France and not mixed with American bred lines then it would still be of pure French origin. But you don't enter a Marans in a show as a French Black Copper Marans or what have you. It is entered as a Black Copper Marans. I think the only time people get their jimmies rustled is when people tack the French onto their Marans too loosely just as a marketing ploy. Like here is my pure French Marans... but yet they are willow legged and overmelanized as crap. Yes I have been duped that way in the past before I knew any better.

The reason American bred lines are not considered "French" even though Marans originated in France is because you have no idea what all Joe Blow has bred into his birds. That's the truth.
I was under the impression that the French delineation had more to do with separation from English Marans, who are clean legged. The French group and the English group have slightly different traits and were bred with different goals in mind.

So you will have electricity in the house then or no?

I've had Silkies before and they are good broodies. But they are fairly small so you can't fit many big Marans eggs under each hen.

I will have electricity, just no bill to pay. with 350+ sunny days fotovoltaic panels + a small wind mill will be plenty.

each silkie can cover 5 marans eggs. perfect for tracking chicks.

I wonder how they got clean legged marans. I wonder if they should be called marans at all. although I saw a naked neck chick in the french thread (marans aspiran). they call it naked neck marans as those chickens lay brown eggs.

The Marans SOP in the US is based on the French standard so folks saying their birds are "French Marans" just because they have feathered legs is a redundancy in my opinion.

But you know what they say about opinions.. lol.

Lol perhaps instead we should call the clean legged ones English Marans since they aren't standard to separate them from the feather legged ones that do follow standard? Because we all know they sell those hatchery bred clean legged cuckoo Marans all over as the standard representative of the Marans breed. :lau:lau

Yes they do! And poor little unknowing customers just buy them expecting dark chocolate eggs that they'll not be getting out of those birds.

My neighbor's new little wife is getting bit by the chicken bug now and wanted to order some Columbian Plymouth Rocks to show. She was going to get them from a hatchery.. bless her heart! I intervened and gave her some of my Old English Games to raise and show. We need more OEG enthusiasts and breeders and I just wanted to get her off on the right foot. Lol. I've also given her some Marans and just gave her a bunch of Legbar chicks today. :)
