International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I buy the wood pellets and it don't take long and they turn it to sawdust. I worry because they eat the small pieces. It can block them up and die. Pheasants are bad about that. I use straw now for Pheasants. How often to you change out the shavings?

they turn it to sawdust .that why I like it .
I m in a hot dry country the wood shaving they performe better.
I do not chabge the bedding ,I use deep brdding method .I add fresh wood shaving when needed .deppend age ,the group number etc.........
when I move aeach group to they new place ,than I clean the place and change a new bedding if i m going use a place again .

for the adult i use deep bedding method too .I top up and when I finish breeding { end of this month November} I group all the hens together in a new place with a new bedding and I empty all the old hen houses and clean them .

don t forget I have a lot space and pens and still building .

Pheasant chicks are tricky. Very delicate when young. Once they reach 6 weeks old they are easy. Sawdust back them up and die. Coccidiosis is a problem. I have it down now. If they poop in feed then eat it they get coccidiosis. I medicate the water now and rarely lose any. They can get vitamin B and niacin deficiency. This is my male red golden. If it where up to my husband we would only do Pheasants. They have one pen and house. The house I use in the summer for my chicks. We have a apple tree in the pen. They sleep in it and not the house anyway. I hope as it gets cold they will go into the house.

He does have a big comb. Maybe with different lines he will grow into it. Would you cull?
no he is not a cull .
I m selecting for body type for a moment .plus he is from the new line a got eggs shipped to me .him his brother and sister from one line 2 cockerels from another line .

the comb could be fixed by the hen .

I was just wondering what you are looking for when you cull chicks. So you are only culling for body type. I need more training to be able to cull that young. I have a difficult time even culling at all till about 12 weeks.
