International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

At the time I was really needing a BC. I culled over colored early because I didn't need a BLC. I kept the one because I seen something in him. I just always liked him. He was better than the BC to me. I kept comparing them. He did end up nice. Now I know to listen to my gut instinct.

Definitely always listen to your gut in every aspect of life. Trust me, had I not listened to my gut 2 weeks ago my situation (unrelated to chickens) would have been a whole lot worse. We are still struggling to cope with the change of moving my child's school due to family drama, and I'm hoping he does okay in the long run. He was very tearful this evening and I hate seeing him so sad. He misses his old school and his friends. Sorry to go off in left field. My mind is fragmented and scattered to the four winds lately.

I'm glad you ended up with excellent stock to work with. We have both struggled with getting our birds where we want them so it's good to see some progress when it comes.

How they are and what to look for in my line.

it is true ,when you breed a line ,you start ot know it better ,

#1 and #6 are full brother . share the same genes .

#1 is better quality .

I like #1 better as well. I'm hoping they only get better as they mature.

Yeah it does, but I will take some overcolored birds and shafting over my high tails any day of the week. I was just so sick of the high tails. It was so exasperating.
My whites had high tails and yellow. High tails I could of worked with. I decided to cull one variety to work with my Coppers better. So whites went bye bye. I am a little sad about it but glad I did it. White pullets I kept for layers. Coppers have always been my favorite. They always will be.

I don't blame you. I feel a little overwhelmed sometimes by having so many breeds/varieties. The black coppers will always be my favorite as well. They are a challenge but I enjoy them. The whites are lovely, but not as lovely as the black/blue coppers when they are done right. :)

@kfelton0002

I m interested in this cockerel .more photos please.
I know he has Black eyes. one genetration and is removed ,but the quality of th hackle copper is the best .plus the comb .the tail all .
only what he is missing is .Black eyes and More shoulder colouring .I don t see where is a problem .
now Prince has showed some white .than need to find another cockerel with a same copper quality .I think this guy make a cut .
Cockerels #1 ,#3 and #4 need more photos of them from all angles .
from this phots I ll say those 3 cockerel are the best you have now , compatable ,minimum fault. nothing so bad and hidden ,all all have a perfect body type and tail #3 I m not sure yet but the other 2 are good .
I rate them better than SW

the rest cockerels #2 .5. 6 ,7 are a cull .nothing to offer .

Thank you very much! That will be a big help to cull a few this weekend. I will do my best to get more pictures of different angles of the birds. Would SW be a cull as well? Or shall I let him hang around?

Prince should be culled as well then? He is the last pure cockerel I have of my line. If he is a cull though, he is a cull. I still have the females from my line to work with.

Malika is stunning .complete bird
Agree with you cockerel #2 is her son
20191105_161439-jpg.1952460

he look s exaclty like her .trimed ,sleek ,best body shape and plumage .

so now we know Malika can produce a perfect marans .she luck the copper quatity . we need to find a best much for her. recording to her genetic make up .
she is senssitive to a split hackle marking .so the cockerel has to have a perfect copper .and not relatted to her .#4 dark ey is the best mach .eye it easy to spot and to cull early .

they will throw great progeny to balance out what will come from Queen{ GDam X Duke s }. body pattern will still need work but not the copper quality .comb will be great .body type and plumage great. just watch for the eyes .only select the orange eyes . easier than dealing with SW . My personle opinion .

don t loose the copper quality in your flock .
Duke is solving a problem but he is adding his own problem ,hard to deal with .

keep progressing ,you have better quality cockerels to work with .
like I said to you .I picked them up because ,they have faults but they are compatable to each other, they don t carry a agressive fault { because you are al ready working with one Duke} you don t need to add more .

when selecting , each cockerel should complement the others ,so you can mate they progeny .as long as you know where th fault come from ,add how agressive is .
