introducing a dog to a cat

My son adopted a pitbull from my other son, but is not used to cats. Is there a good way to introduce one to the other without fur flying? Their cat gets along with dogs, but the pit was encouraged to chase cats at his first home. The vet suggested muzzling the dog for the first encounters, but they're afraid that the muzzle may cause stress to the pit and make it worse. Any suggestions???

That's hard, the muzzle would keep him from grabbing the cat so the cat would be safer. The dog will need a lot of controlling but it's hard to hang onto a scared cat without injury. Can you cage the dog in the room and let the cat walk around free for awhile to let them see each other and gradually get used to each other without endangering the cat?

Thank you for your suggestions They solved the problem by re-homing the cat to friends, so all's quiet on the western front!!
