Hi All!
Long time "listener", first time "Caller"..!
I've been keeping chickens in my back yard, and then at a plot of land just outside Ore, Hastings for nearly 2 years now. I started with 6 rescue battery hens and had an uphill battle with suburban, and then country foxes, resulting in a set up of 1 Araucana (with a bit of legbar possivbly) cockerel - raised from 8 weeks with his half-sister (Araucana/Cream Legbar status similar to half-brother) - the aforementioned half-sister, 2 cream legbar hens, 1 reverse sussex, & finally the full complex setup of 5 9-wekk old chicks from the eggs of said brood! I think I've only got 1 pullet in the new batch
I first got into chicken keeping for egg produce, but through the process of losing of hens, I stopped eating chicken (!) so had to re-evaluate my relationship with meat! Long story short, I'm now raising chickens (& Quail for eggs and balancing my feelings about eating meat by eating the young male birds that would have to be despatched anyways...
Chickens are part of a larger, permaculture-inspired project with my husband on our 2ish acre plot of land in East Sussex. We are also hoping to grow a lot of the feed for our flocks, through plants, crops, compost & mealworm farming, so I look forward to delving into the archives of the knowledgebase on here for top tips!
