IS there a semi-safe way to use RAT poison around DOGS????

thanks, I had 2 pieces in the PVC pipe and one of those was gone this afternoon. So I added some to the garage and pvc pipe.

Hopefully this will reduce the rat population.

"If the problem is such that you must resort to using a poison — and we would never recommend that you simply tolerate rats and mice, to do so would be to risk your family’s health — please consider selecting a Coumatetralyl based poison like Racumin, which is also readily available from shops and is about the same price as the other kinds of baits. While it is still highly toxic and should always be used with the greatest care and as a last resort, Coumatetralyl does not accumulate up the food chain in the same way as Warfarin, Bromadioline and Brodifacoum. This means that it poses less of a risk to our native predators"

Anti coagulants are what kill dogs! And if a dog finds a dead rat that has bled out as a result of that poison they can die. HELP. I hate these rats but i have a dog who will eat anything if he finds it.
Sounds like just one bite is the way to go. will research it more. I hate to get rid of my chickens but i am going to catch holy hell from the health dept. if this gets worse.

I have to agree... if a dog ingests a rat...the contents of the stomach of the rat being full...of rat poison....it will kill a dog...this is information I have had from a Vet...!

I use poison here...the rat holes are deep and the poison is put into the holes and covered with rocks...the rats will usually die within a few days...I will always clear any dead rat carcass immediately I see any... I do not want my dogs, chickens or any of my other animals to be at risk..rats are a daily nightmare and carry deadly disease that can also kill a human...always wear protective gloves even when handling a dead rat...

Thanks for the tip=i will put poison in the holes and cover also. I have purchased some bait stations also that should be chicken and dog proof (as possible anyway). In your experience are the dead rats relatively close to where they live? I wonder how paranoid i have to be about picking up carcasses so my dog (or a fox or another dog etc) doesn't get harmed. Thanks a lot. I guess this is going to be something i just have to start dealing with. In 7 years of keeping chickens this is a first but i suspect now that i have rats i will have to "manage" them constantly. YUCK.

The rat runs are fairly close to the chicken, duck and geese housing...I have found a lot of dead rats in the vicinity of the housing...probably because there is a food source there for them....my geese and ducks ignore any dying rats...however, my chickens will ( if given the opportunity ) peck at a carcass... it is an ongoing problem...

I have five GSD's here and the three young ones will attempt to eat anything dying or rotting here...I am ever vigilant and dispense of any dying rodents pronto...

I just went through this problem recently, we had a really bad norway rat infestation in the run. I put out just one bite bars everyday for 4 days on the outside of the run, and I hung the food feeder up at night with a garbage bag covering the feeder. I did this until the bars stopped disappearing. During that time I only found 1 dead rat in the run and the chickens never even touched it. the best part is I have not seen a rat in the area since. If I am not mistaken the bars of just one bite are one of the few poisons that can be treated by a vet if by chance your dog does eat it. even though the dose is so low in a dead rat it will most likely not harm your dog. The cure is a vitamin k and you animal will most likely not touch even touch the poison bars anyway, at least my dog showed no interest at all. The just one bite bars took care of the problem much faster then I expected it to. I was not a true believer of using poisons either but the situation needed to be delt with fast so it wouldnt ge out of control . But I believe now.
